Subject: Beginner Question: 1/2IM to Full IM Transition
I just finished my first 1/2 IM (Galveston) on 4/6 following a 20 week training plan. My next race is my first Full IM (Florida) on 11/2. I plan to start my 20 week training cycle for the Full IM in mid June. This leaves me with roughly 60 days before the beginning of my Full IM training cycle.
Question: what is a good plan for the next 60 days to maintain/build my conditioning without burning out? I have been considering focus on my weaker disciplines. Examples might be leg strength drills such as bike+hill repeats, run intervals/sprints, etc.
Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions........I want to use this "in between training" time as effectively as possbile.

Congrats on finishing your first 70.3 !

Personally, I would take a break. Do some stuff you want to do.
It can be swim, bike, run if you wish, but I wouldn't do it for the sake of training in between...and I wouldn't do much volume in the running dept.
keep it mentally fun.

You might lose a little fitness, but not a lot. The rest is more important for your mind and body IMO.

The IM plan will seem fresh if you take a break now.

Good luck to you! I am doing IMFL as well. I have been using an Olympic plan and will do a HIM in July. I am a little nervous I will get burned out! Maybe you should just do some lighter workouts, some fun, shorter distance racing, social bike rides, etc. Hey, that sounds fun to me too. Congrats on your HIM.

Take a little break.  You deserve it.

I would then concentrate on doing some shorter and more intense stuff.  Get faster and raise your ceiling so to speak.  Then go into your IM training cycle.  Is the IM training plan for 20 weeks?  I have my thoughts on that.

I think a 20 week IM plan stacked onto a 20 week HIM plan can lead to burnout.  You're in (presumably) really good shape right now.  I would concentrate on shorter, more intense stuff for a few more weeks and do a 12-16 week IM build.

I see you're in Austin.  There's nothing remotely fun about training long during our Texas summers.  I've done a late season IM three times (FL 2x and AZ 1x).  The first time I did IMFL I did a similar thing -- a 16 week HIM plan followed up by a 20 week IM plan.  I was absolutely fried by the time IMFL came around.  Doing 100 mile bike rides or 16 mile runs in July and August is akin to torture.

A couple of years later I did IMAZ and then I did IMFL again last year.  I had done Galveston each year as well so I was in great shape early each year.  After Galveston I just did shorter, less structured and more intense stuff for several weeks that didn't require endless hours outside in the Texas heat.  I saved the long outdoor grind for late-August, September and October.  Still hot but not as bad.

YMMV though.

Excellent feedback, thank you. You are soooo right about the toll the Texas heat can take out of you. I do have a few century rides planned in my IM training mix (e.g. HTH100, Livestrong) but those are late Summer early Fall rides. May I ask you another question? Did the Texas heat/humidity help prepare you for IMFL? Part of my psyche wants to say "suck it up"..........-

Yes.  I actually do most of my racing outside of Texas.  Galveston is usually the only race I do in TX.

I found the heat/humidity training to be beneficial when it's not as hot or humid at your race day location.  Also remember that your body adjusts relatively quickly to things like humidity.  So training in July humidity doesn't matter much come November.

Grats on the HIM. First thing's first, RECOVER. I would take some time off and get a little mental break in as well. You want to make sure you're going in to your IM training fully recovered and ready to go. The other thing I would think about, is adding some strength and stability training, you want to make sure your body is ready for the beating it's going to take. Nothing crazy, just maybe add a little mass, cause you will probably lose a fair amount during training. A little speed work might not hurt either, do some intensity now, cause you're not going to have much time or energy for it later. Just make sure you start your IM training fresh, and feeling good.

Best of luck on your IM!

Good info as I am doing my HIM a little early for my schedule too. However, my training plan is a 30 week program. I am also not in really great shape due to a winter illness. That being said I have a very solid base. Hmmmm, you have me thinking. The last thing I want is to be "fried". Seriously...

This training plan is written to prepare you for your first Ironman. While just a beginner’s plan, the hours per week start at a significant 8 hours.
