Subject: RE: How important is the kick?

I'm not going to get into the kick don't kick debate.  I am a horrible kicker and have no place commenting

That said, watch the ITU races and the kicks these guys and girls are putting out.  It's quite impressive.  I have to believe that there must be something to a strong kick since these triathletes (who are arguably the best in the world) are doing it

Great videos dmiller. Between Bobby McGee and Ryan Hall discussing proper & efficient use of the arms in running, it's tough to argue otherwise. "butt running" where you are seated on the ground and "run" by pumping your arms and integrating the hip movement is a fun drill.

Just like in running where the arms must be a) coordinated and b) efficient in order to enhance rather than detract from speed, the same is true in swimming.

However in swimming proper coordination and efficient use of legs is much harder for many people. lots of kickign is one potential way of getting better, but it's kind of like a trial & error approach...just do a bunch and maybe you'll figure it out.

However if that's not been a productive approach for an individual, they may see quicker improvment, faster speed and more efficient swimming by minimizing use of the legs.

Basically everyone is going to be different and it's tough to say without seeing some one swim right in front of me, what the best approach to kick training will be. There is no once size fits all.

So to the OP... kick sets might help, they might not.

It seems that if I swim that slow I begin to sink and I have to either kick or pull harder to compensate while my heart-rate starts going up. I find myself kicking too hard trying to keep afloat.

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.

Good swimming is relaxed swimming. Relaxed swimming depends on practicing the best techniques and the best body position.
