Asking this question for a friend....

Is there any substantial reason to avoid a workout if you are sporting a mid-range hangover?

Apart from being a ted dehydrated when you start and not feeling particularly strong.

Also would you favor/avoid a swim, bike or run session in this scenario?

tell your "friend"

dehydration is the probably the main concern for an endurance athlete.

I'd avoid riding on the road until I was mentally "sharp" again, and possibly the same for swimming.

Tell your "friend" I'd favor a run and take water. Usually clears up a hangover for me. Even if it's painful.

I'd favor a swim. The colder the water the better!

3 Advil.  Full bottle of water.  Run till the sweats stop then start up again.

yup, hydrate well, and take an easy run, helps sweat out the vodka.  at least, that's what my friend tells me.  skip it if you are still nauseous.

I knew a guy in college that, after extensive research, found out that while it really sucks - working out on a hangover is an effective way to get over it.

One experiment had a 2x session of run/bike on a wicked hangover. By the time the run was done, the hangover was completely gone, and he was ready to go out again that night (I believe he did in fact go out again...)

This probably works better when you're closer to 20 than 40 yrs old though.

For me (and my friend), a run is the best cure for a hangover.

Painful, but it kicks start the system.

Here's another vote for workouts being a pretty good curer of a hangover. I'll bike on the trainer if the head is throbbing too much to run, but typically a run is the more effective method of sweating out the badness.

My friends tell me that  as counterintuitive as it sounds, it's best to get it done and sweat it out. You feel way better afterwards. Just be sure to hydrate throughout.

I had a friend who ran a 40 min 10k race, a week later he spent all night drinking, woke up way to late with a huge hangover, grabbed his sneakers, ran to the start line and put down a sub 38 minute 10k. I wish that friend was actually me, but it wasn't........not even close.

running with a hangover beats the heck out of running while still drunk!

Ask my "friend" how I know.

All my friends unanimously agree with all this advice already given. Just don't drive to your workout spot.

When you hit a certain age, every workout feels like it is done hungover!

Seriously, a short to medium EASY run is awesome, and I actually forget the night before.

I have a "friend" who always feels better after a long run that's well hydrated with water containing a Nuun tablet. That's what she's told me.

She's suffered on the bike and wished she'd stayed home, and swims in the pool aren't awful, but open water ones with waves and chop didn't help the upset tummy, so she said.
