58 , North Carolina | Subject: Training With Knee Pain My right knee started hurting during a 10 mile run a little over 2 weeks ago. I stayed off of it for 2 weeks (no running). It doesn't bother me to bike or swim, so I have been focusing on those. I tried running on it a couple of days ago, and it started hurting again before I got to a mile. Same thing happened today. The pain is on the front/lower area of the knee (that soft part that bulges a little when your leg is fully extended), and radiates outward towards the side of the knee. Anyone dealing/dealt with this? I have a decent base right now, but I am really frustrated that I can't run a mile without pain. I have a 70.3 coming up on June 1st and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions (or miracle cures). |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Training With Knee Pain Don't run. Knee pain is nothing to mess with, especially the way you describe yours. I tried to run through mine last year for a couple of months and ended up on the ground....and then surgery.....and have not really ran since except for some testing to see how it felt. First time I've been grounded from running in my life, and it's no fun. |

Expert 2192 Greenville, SC | Subject: RE: Training With Knee Pain sounds like a patella issue. there are bands you can use to mediate the issue, but i would look for the cause. i got knee pain a few weeks ago and have now lost about 3 weeks of training to it. finally went to a PT and i still have a lot of tightness, but not as much pain/discomfort. |

107 | Subject: RE: Training With Knee Pain See a doctor, that's what I would do. Your too close to race day to risk not being able to run at all. Get it diagnosed and start healing instead of hoping it will get better and risk a debilitating injury. |

New user 230 penticton | Subject: RE: Training With Knee Pain what you describes is Patellofemoral syndrome. it s also refer to as ''runners knee'' . it s something most runner/triathlete will have to deal with. it s something that need to be addressed as rest does nothing for it. Most likely, you would simply need to book a few ART appointment with a good chiro or physio, get some soft tissue work on to loosen up the muscle around the patella. once it start tracking properly again, you can SLOWLY build back your running. So, start rolling on foam roller. mostly itb, quads and inside the legs. while many would talk about ''strengthening''....the main reason you had issue is a overload of those muscle and your biomechanic falling appart...muscle tensing up. So...get those muscle loosen...relax -ART -ice if there is inflammation -TP massage or foam roller, -adress quads, ITB, Adductor -Calf also -slowly get back to running...start with some walk run... and icing after the run to not let the body create any inflammation/swelling -run ever second day... not two days in a row -back to running on grass of soft surface only... as for biking...don't do any big gear work....while you don't feel any pain...riding can aggravate your issue, so high cadence for you. water running is a good thing if you have a good running base, it could allow you to loose very little running fitness from now until your back to running if you take this seriously...get on it right away...you can beat it in a matter of a week or two. Ignoring it or running on it may make it worse and longer to recover. This , There are just too many possibilities when it comes to your knee, see a pro and get a proper diagnosis and recovery plan. If you took a 2 week rest period and it still came back you have something more then a simple overuse issue going on and need to get it addressed as soon as possible. No, if you take 2 weeks off because of a overuse injury (scare tissue build up) it will do nothing for you. The first mile you come back, the problem is there as it was the day you injured yourself. while i m all about people been rich and having access to orthopedic surgeon on commend, for most athlete, simple overuse injury are easy to resolve and should only be a matter of missing a few days of training. |

Expert 2098 Ontario Canada | Subject: RE: Training With Knee Pain While I might not Run to see an orthopedic surgeon myself right away, I would sure be Hitting my local sport injuries clinic for professional advice from a Doc that has seen it all before and get it checked out and probably getting My physiotherapist to give it a good once over as well , then if they recommended seeing the specialist I would be doing It. Having had to recently take a year off of running completely due to a knee issue that I thought I could RUN thru and only making it worse this would be my Advice . 58 , North Carolina | Subject: RE: Training With Knee Pain Thanks for all of the feedback. I have an appointment next week with an orthopedist specializing in sports medicine. So, hopefully, we can figure this thing out. In the mean time I am foam rolling, advil'ing and icing. |

Veteran 327 Plaquemine, Louisiana | Subject: RE: Training With Knee Pain I had runners knee last year. I had to stop running for 2 months and had to do physical therapy. Continuing to run on it will extend your recovery. |
