I am just curious to see how many of you wear socks for the bike leg during a race? I have trained some without socks, but wear them more often than not.

Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa.
Subject: RE: Socks!

I hardly wear socks for the bike leg in training or racing.  Certainly depends on the weather though.

I always wear socks for the run.

I wear socks most of the time on the bike. Five extra seconds in T1. I like how they feel. I occasionally race and train on the bike without socks so it wouldn't bother me too much.....

No socks for sprint or Olympic distance on the bike or run.   But you need to try it in training first.  Nothing new on raceday.

Don't even own a pair of socks. (Not an exaggeration, I like in Key West). In any event, I have never used them on bike or running.

Iron/half iron distance, yeah. Any less, nah. Too much of a hassle to dry your feet etc.

Never during a race and only if its really cold for outdoor training rides (FL so not that often).  My tri bike shoes are very comfortable without, not a single hot spot to worry about.  Carries over to the run in races too for Sprints/Oly.  HIM I 'll put on the socks in T2.

As a slow AG'er I always wear socks. The 5 seconds of time in T1 is worth the comfort throughout the rest of the race. Same thing for bike glove.

I wear socks in training but not in racing.  I went sockless in training at first, but after a while my shoes started smelling pretty funky.  Socks help prevent the funk from building.

Can't stand socks when on the bike. For longer races I put them on in T2.

For the funkingrooven smell, leave a box fan on low and put your shoes (both running and cycling) shoes in front of it as soon as you come back in and that'll dry them out before the smelly stuff builds.

At my age (57) and speed (MOP at best), I always wear socks on bike and run. I remember a store in DC called "Joy of Sox!"

Wear them. Generally the same pair for bike and run. My bike shoes just aren't comfortable without them. Some of my running shoes are; I do some shorter runs and shorter swim/run events without socks. I put baby powder in the shoes/socks before I set up transition, it helps them go on easy even with wet feet. I keep a spare pair of socks in transition for the run but have only used them once (when it was raining hard on the bike, I was drenched, and had 13 miles to run). My transitions aren't always the greatest but it's not the socks--sometimes have issues with being cold and/or dizzy after the swim and that can slow me down. That being said, the time I won a sprint distance swim/run race, I didn't wear socks--I knew it would be close and I needed those few seconds. Semi-FOP--it depends on the race. I'm usually in the running for an AG podium in most of my races. Some of my competitors wear socks, some don't. More common to put them on after the bike, though.

Absolutely.....it's why I bring a bucket to transition, so I can sit and pull my socks on in comfort.

Ah, the bucket! I did that for my first tri, very handy indeed. The only downside was the 3/4 mile walk to/from the parking lot carrying said bucket... while I do miss sitting on it my spiffy transition backpack is much easier to transport.

No socks for the bike or run. I wear socks running in training, but rarely on the bike (pretty much only if its cold out.) I'll see how that running holds up for the oly distance training this season.

I always race without socks (no matter what distance), but I do most of my bike training with socks. Running is sock less (unless it's winter, then I wear socks for warmth)

Always for bike and run at every distance. About every other season I try to run without socks and get a blister in the first mile or two. And I figure if I'm putting them on at all during a race then why not wear them for both bike and run.

But at my last IM 70.3 I had the second fastest transitions in the top 100 guys in my AG (I stopped looking past that). So clearly they're not slowing me down that much. (That sounds dangerously like a brag but can you really brag about transition times?)

: ) Well in that case, I can also wolf down a post race slice of pizza faster than anyone in the overall top ten... at any race. In fact, I'm looking to qualify for some sort of world championship race that way. I'll post my pic with the team USA kit.

I didn’t used to like to run slow. You begin to recalibrate your needs and wants and if-only you could jog an easy two miles, three times per week. Running is a gift.
