So has there been any threads on any cycling or tri forums about someone getting their Shiv stolen? Even if the owner doesn't post you would think that 6 degrees of separation would lead to someone linking the thread.

Actually, yes.

Sidney - you do realize that the vast majority of triathletes NEVER post on an internet forum, right?

Do you do the same for people riding in expensive cars that don't look like they can afford it or don't fit the type of person that should have a nice car?

I'm a black person and I've often ridden my bike with regular clothes on. Would you have called the police on me cause I'm riding a bike that you feel I could not have possibly afforded, cause I'm not the TYPE to have an expensive bike?

Unbelievable.

Really? It's 2014, drop the race card... It gets old...

ditto.

It never gets old for someone who actually deals with racism in 2014.

Amen.

I could probably count the number of Shivs for sale in NM at any one time on one hand with most of my fingers missing. So, I don't think it's unreasonable to think that a Shiv stolen in NM would end up on the market one state away.

I should probably stay out of this, but...

I can think of many reasons why someone dressed as the OP described would be riding an expensive tri bike - they were testing it after fixing it, giving it a ride in consideration of buying it, their commuter had a flat, the Shiv is their commuter (pretty unlikely). That said,if I was riding a $3000+ tri or road (or maybe even mountain) bike in jeans, sneakers on my clipless pedals and no helmet, especially in a not-so-nice neighborhood, I would darn well EXPECT to get stopped and questioned if spotted by a reasonably intelligent officer. I've ridden my road bike exactly as the OP described after wrenching on it (except for the no-helmet part - after I've wrenched on it, you better be damn sure I'm wearing a helmet, 'cause something is likely to let go!). And if I got stopped, I'd thank the cop for checking.

It would be a different story if I was kitted out and had my bike shoes on. It might also be a different story if I regularly encountered situations where I was profiled due to the way I dress or the color of my skin, and understand that those that encounter that situation would be sensitive to it. But in this case, it was the clothes that didn't fit the situation. It's kind of like every time I see someone running in jeans - I wonder what they're running from or to, not whether those jeans are going to hurt their quest for a PR.

I find it interesting that you get the opposites reactions responding to these threads. You have once camp demonizing the OP for profiling or stereotyping. On the other hand you have the camp giving kudos to the OP. We now some of the facts, it was a white male tattooed dressed like a gang banger, in a sketchy part of town. The rider riding areo is confusing, I was able to ride areo in my first 5 mins on the bars, I would guess the skill comes with cornering or high speeds. I don’t know if the OP stated he was in sneakers on clipless pedals, but that would be a big question mark.

If I was the owner of a stolen bike I would want people to say “hey this looks off”, If I was the owner of an expensive bike riding in baggy jeans and sneakers etc, I would not be offended if I was stopped, I would embrace it. I have been stopped 6-7 times in my life by the police because I looked out of sorts, once I was climbing over a fence in my back yard late at night, I had just chased a cat that escaped and was returning, the police were driving by stopped me. Another time I was walking home from the bar and matched the description of a guy who just robbed a gas station, I gave them my ID and was cleared and given a ride home even.

To the OP, and all who agree with her you did a good thing, crime is going to happen, and if you notice something out of sorts you call it for what it is, and the police can figure it out. Criminals will keep committing crimes, and to turn the other way just enables them. The police are trained to sort the facts and deal with this. Profiling and stereotypes happen, or the situation fits them and reinforces them, it doesn’t make it right but the fallacy of fairness and equality are exactly that a great ideal but not a reality.

I would venture to guess that everyone holds some sort of prejudice or judgment, most people are in denial about it, I will freely admit I have them, is it fair? Heck no, but life isn’t fair. I am responsible for myself and only myself, I can only change myself, and hope other change themselves. Would you buy an off brand bike online from China? Why not? Another judgment call, High fat diets vs Low carb diets you use your judgment there too without the facts, once you are informed or know the facts then and only then can you make the decision without of prejudice or judgmental behavior.

A person picking up a bike who does not have a race number nor a race number that matches the bike definitely looks "the type" and should be checked. Maybe the race staff already checked other folks that "were doing the same thing", maybe they knew them or maybe they were being escorted by the person with the race number. Are you 100% sure that your SO was checked just because he looked a particular type and that someone else in the same situation wouldn't be checked as well? You may nott know what the exact situation was for other folks "doing the same thing".

Well, here is my $.02:

1. "sweet Specialized Shiv" = nice, expensive bike in a really bad part of town. Odd, but not enough to call the cops.
2. "He was late teens, early 20s" = Nothing wrong here.
3. "in baggy jeans, oversized jersey" = Dumb and dangerous to ride in that outfit, pretty weird, too.
4. "sneakers" = not using clip-less pedals on a tri bike while riding aero. Very odd, but possibly explained by what other posters have said, i.e. working on it, test riding it, mechanic.

When you look at the "Totality of the Circumstances", IMHO, there would be enough to get over the "Reasonable Articulable Suspicion" standard to conduct a stop to investigate. As Left Brain said earlier, a field interview would be able to sort it out in short order if it was the kid's bike. If so, he goes on his way with a good story. If not, the real owner gets their bike back.

Anyone who says they would get P.O.'ed for being stopped when riding "that bike" looking "that way" is not being realistic.

FWIW - I would have called and let the police sort it out.

I'm a firm believer in this famous quote: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Edmund Burke
