Anyone care to share any tips for speedy and effective application of sunblock in transition? Thanks...

Neutrogena has a 100spf spray. It's works really well, and needless to say, it's very easy to apply. I highly recommend it.

Just be sure to check your six before you unleash. People generally don't appreciate a mouthful of sunblock mid race

I don't apply it in transition, I put it on ahead of time.  Specifically, my strategy is to put some on right after I wake up in the morning.  Then I have breakfast, get ready etc, go to the race site and do whatever needs to be done to setup transition.  Then I re-apply another layer of sunscreen while waiting for the race to start.

I used that strategy for both of my HIMs last year and didn't get even slightly burnt.  This included a race in Miami which is pretty strong sun for this Canadian skin!

This is pretty much what I do. I put some on right after I wake up in the morning and then one more layer right before I leave the hotel. This has worked for me in 70.3's as well.

Tip 1. Buy good sunscreen. It should be white because that means it has zinc and or titanium in it which is what blocks the sun.

Tip 2. Put it on 15 - 30 minutes in advance. Good sunblocks are rated to last 80 minutes in the water.

Tip 3. Reapply in long races. In the races I've done there are volunteers to help with this.

Tip4. Where you can cover your skin during long races for added coverage.

My opinion as a fair-skinned someone who lives near the tropics is that the sprays don't really work as well as creams. Actually ,I don't think they work at all but I'm trying not to be extremist.

My sunscreens of choice are: waterman, solarx, and blue lizard. My kids like blue lizard because it rubs in. But waterman works better in my opinion. In a pinch I'll pick up a nutragena cream but once you've used a really good sunblock the difference is pretty obvious.

i have only raced sprint/oly to date, and have never had a problem with just putting on sunblock in the morning pre-race.  get good, water "proof," lotion, rub it in and then get dressed, then don't worry about it!  longer course...i got nothing.

Really? Just pre-race for a 70.3? Not sure I'll risk that, I don't want any more horror from my first one than is absolutely necessary...

Sleeves for IM distance races - see my pic. Without them, the most exposed places are your shoulder blades and your lower arms because of all the hours on the bike when the sun is highest. You still need to use sunscreen underneath, and apply more to your legs in transition, but it saves time.

My sunblock strategy:

  1. I now wear a short sleeved trisuit like the Pearl Izumi Octane or the Castelli Free Sanremo SS.  The Octane sleeves go almost down to my elbow.  The Castelli suit is a more typical mid-bicep sleeve.
  2. I wear arm coolers to cover the rest of my arms.
  3. That leaves only my neck, ears and face to worry about.
  4. Wear a hat on the run.
  5. This is not only for sunscreen but also a bit of advice for a more speedy transition:  I carry a little snack sized ziplock bag that holds my salt capsules, 1 oz. tube of Aquaphor, Chapstick, and 1 oz. tube of sunscreen.  That way in T2 all I have to do is throw on my socks, running shoes, hat, and grab the little ziplock bag and go.  I apply the sunscreen after exiting T2 and do so while I'm moving.  Don't waste time in T2 putting on sunscreen when you can do it on the move in the first mile.

That's all I did for both of mine and as I said above, not even a hint of a burn.

How long you expect to be out on the course could play a part in the decision as well.

For my HIMs and IMs I will apply sunblock the night before, right after my shower. Your pores are more open right after a shower and the sunblock will really absorb well. Then I do another layer right after I wake up.

I get surfer-grade sunscreen that is full of zinc and takes forever to rub in. I like getting a face stick as well, because I use the stick to get my lower back and along the shoulders of my tri-kit for extra "sticky" coverage. And I'll also wear my DoSoto Cool wings.

No need to apply in transitions.

I used Planet Sun last year and this year I'm trying Zealios.

I burn like toast. For my recent 70.3, I applied pre race, and in both transitions. It worked out great. Only...I missed the lower part of my shoulder exposed by the edge of the tri suit (where I couldn't reach too well) and the back of my calves. I fried like an egg in those places and paid for it. So, my strategy paid off great for the areas I applied the sunscreen. The areas I forgot....I'm still peeling.

Bullfrog spray on sunscreen in T1. I neglected to do this once, flatted 40 miles into the race and ended up spending an extra hour on the course (pinched nerve made it almost impossible to change out the tube). The conditions were a perfect storm. Ended up with 2nd degree sun burns that needed a tetanus shot and I couldn't wear a bra for a week.
