Hello Everyone!

My name is Stephanie, I'm 25 years old & my ambition is to complete an Iron Man by age 30.

I was doing very well for about 2 years. I consistently ran, I swam when I could & was looking at investing in a decent road bike. In 2013 all my plans were put on hold after I participated in the Tough Mudder. On one of the last obstacles, I tore my ACL. Two months later I had major knee surgery & have been out of commission since, only just getting clearance from my orthopedic surgeon to start being active a few months ago. The weather still plays a huge factor in whether or not I can go out for some exercise, since the cold wreaks havoc on my joints.

I used to run a consistent 9 minute mile & would run at least 3.5 miles a day plus work out 7 days a week. I was a machine. Now I can barely manage 2.5 miles at a 10 minute pace, even with a pre-run Aleve in my system & an ice pack waiting at home. It is slow going, but my goal is taped to my fridge & every day I try to tell myself that I can keep going.

I will try to be a good participant on this page & I can't wait to get back in the game the way I was before.

Welcome!  All I can say is to build back up slow given your injury.  Maybe go with the 5% rule for running instead of the 10% rule - or start with biking or even aqua-jogging first.  I'm sure your doc gave you plenty of options.

How does swimming feel on your knees/ACL?  Does the kick bother it?

Hi!

Thanks for the advice!

I am trying to go slow, but it sucks because I keep thinking of how good I used to be. I forget that I didn't get that good overnight. Swimming is great, I just moved to a place that has a large enough pool to do laps in and as soon as it is warm enough up here I will be visiting it regularly! Because i fractured my knee cap the movements I could do were really limited: mainly walking and recumbent bikes were my go to.

For most people, there is a story in how they came to the sport as beginners. Some of the most inspiring of those beginner tales begin with health scares.

My expectations for the quality of this years’ Triathlon world championship were fulfilled. This was because of the superb location that is like no other along with having the top triathletes present.

There is a marvelous destiny out there waiting for you too, but only if you are willing to take chances and put yourself on the line.
