Doing my first 50 this weekend. What's the most important do's and don'ts you've found? Could be anything just looking to pass the time during taper boredom

Are you doing Ft. Clinch? I see you're in FL. I wanted to do that one, but we have company this weekend, so I can't make it. I have a friend doing the 100 and I wish I was doing the 50.

Advice: go comfortable (slow) unless you're trying to PR, but it's your first 50...so, no. Be conservative at the beginning walking the hills unless you're speedy.
Eat lots and stay on top of hydration and salt. I think that's going to be the factor this weekend with temps in the 80's.

HAVE FUN!!

I am doing Fort Clinch. I'm lucky in that I live 3 miles from the Fort so I've put a lot of miles in there this month. It is going to be hot (mostly humid on the trail portions). Do you get your sodium through foods or salt sticks? I had a hard time last run in there because the humidity just kicked in (later than normal) and Infinit started tasting like garbage. Working on salted potatoes and rice balls. I think my Garmin had about 225 ft of climbing per lap so 1100 total. I take the hills a little easier but hadn't walked them. There's only a few "hills", a lot of the elevation is through rolling segments where I couldn't really walk.

Here's 22 miles in there from earlier. Keeping pace is going to be tough with the single track trail and thick canopy. Satellite reception isn't the greatest and my 910 will read 12 mm one second and 6 mm the next. Really looking forward to it, but nervous as I tend to set lofty goals for myself. Glad the RD was able to sell the race out with 100 runners between the 2 distances. Really going to make it easier not being alone often.

I use electrolyte pills (Endurolytes, S-caps, etc) every hour and I'll eat some salty foods at the aid stations. I tend to drink a lot, so I balance it out. It's your first, I recommend having lofty goals like "have fun, run a smart race," etc. There are other races for focusing on improvement. This one is about getting to the finish line safely and happy! If you don't want to walk, then just make sure you're running a comfortably easy pace, listening to your body and not your Garmin. After 35mi, it gets tough! I find 35-40-42 to be he hardest mentally. There's so much to learn. I think people are the most successful with they roll with the punches and don't dwell on things that go wrong. Deal with any issues, let them go, then move on to the finish!

You're speedy! Based on the website course description, I was expecting it to be worse. I think you'll do great!

Keep your focus on the mile at hand.

If you hit a rough patch try not to worry about how many miles you have left. Eat something. It will pass.

Break the race down in to the distance to the next aid station.

If you start getting dizzy, the ground starts moving, you start hallucinating alligators then your low on salt. Potato chips, chicken broth, ramen, salt tablets, doesnt matter just get it down in whatever way tastes best. And if you're low on salt, all of the salty choices will taste divine.

Don't get stuck on someone elses pace. Pass if you need to. Step aside for someone to pass if you need to.

Changing out wet socks for dry ones is nirvana

Do not sit down. Ever. Unless its an emergency.

If in doubt, have something to eat. Especially in the later miles an attitude problem is often due to lack of calories.

Have a blast! Savor the finish line, you only get the first time once!

If your stomach starts to go pump water only and electrolyte tabs, esp if warm temps. I would also add that after you throw up it feels much better!

The course isn't the toughest however having only run asphalt at sea level, 2000 ft climbing will add up on me. It's going to be warm at 85 and the humidity will make it warmer on the trails, but I did all my runs for IMFL during the summer last year so heat really doesn't bother me. Lucky for me it's a 10 mile loop with aid stations every 2.5. My plan is to pretty much run from aid station to aid station.

30?! Hahaa. Although, I do try to hold out as long as possible, if it's hot, I usually start earlier. Nectar of the gods during a race!

Gelucil antacid, anti-gas and/or pepcid BEFORE your stomach begins to rebel. You must be able to fuel the machine.

Big fan of coke when I'm tired. Although I do see the idea in waiting. I tend to get pretty dependent on it once I start. I've never thought of or used antacids before, during, or after a race. Hadn't really thought of that

X4 on the coca cola! I start at the first aid station as well!

At TNF50 they also serve Mt Dew, that I wait till mile 30, its like jet fuel!

Tough parts are really personal-I wierd out during the 14-19 spread, then I'm golden. And then totally relax after 30.

How could I have forgotten some ibuprofen? Finished second this morning with an official time of 8:19 (even though my garmin said 8:24?) It was an experience. Still can't wrap my head around the fact that there's still people out there running 100. Dark place came at mile 42. RR tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!

Well done!

With a finish time like that, it sounds like you followed all the good BT advice and made zero mistakes.

I got really lucky and had a great group to run with for the first 15 which stopped me from going out to fast. That was my biggest fear. For nutrition all I used was pre measured 400 cal bags of Infinit along with salt tabs because it was warm. I started drinking coke at mile 20 and had about 6 oz every 5 miles. There were buffets set out at the start of each loop and at another aid station about half way through. I never got hungry though. It was an experience but I still couldn't imagine going 100
