Subject: Swim Workouts
Hi! Just started doing some swim workouts with a CrossFit in Saddle Brook, NJ. I've never really swam competitively before so this is really helping. We learn a specific skill for that day and then the workout consists of that skill plus a land skill, I.e lunges, squats, etc. Let me know if anyone is interested and I can give more details.

I'm curious about what you are doing with the class, great that it is helping.

My first reaction is why pollute a swim practice with lunges or squats that you could do later, but I understand it's variety & it's fun and if you'r enot a swimmer, that could make swim practice more interesting.

[QUOTEAnother warm welcome by the BT crowd

What's wrong with being welcoming and open minded??

If the OP is still reading...I'm still listening.

One of my son's coach will run the following work out ever once and awhile. At one of the pull they have to get out and jump in stream position ( I actually think this drill is to get proper position for streamline after a flip turn) 5 to 10 jumps. In one direction they kick in stream line while the other direction is freestyle. The end that they don't get out it is a normal flip turn. The work out seem to wear the out. It is not a common workout and it seem like it is near the beginning of the season it may be to evaluate who is in shape. I haqve seen him do it with both the little kids (my son is 10) and a High School age group.

A fun variation of this is to swim free, mid way, do a somersault, land with feet on the bottom of the pool, bend knees & go all the way under & explode up to the sky in streamlined position. It's "gravity assisted" since the water provides bouyancy...so you can spend the same energy/calories as the land based version, but you'll go further...which is more motivating. Plus it's way fun. I have swimmers do this in a 50m lane, somersault, 3 explosions then resume free style with a strong explosive push off the wall on returning.
