don't compare your training log to others. some have more time, some enjoy one sport more than another, and some fudge.

where does the butt cheek pinching come into play? for pictures? for walking around in public wearing spandex?

I read it somewhere that was describing good posture when you're swimming. But I just do it all the time because it makes me feel cool

If you ever have GI issues during a race, you will remember that quote.

Not really advice to me per se, but I have enjoyed loosely following the John Newsom three year plan. Don't progress through the distances so fast, as a beginner it was really good for me to spend a little time on the shorter stuff before taking on the full 140.6 distance.

Nothing new on race day, i.e. have done each of the things you plan to do (like swim in open water) using the the equipment you plan to use on race day before you get to the starting line.

Injury comes from going to far to fast. Slow and steady build.

x2 on T.I.T.S,

For biking: training rides should be mostly hard, sometimes easy

For running: run frequently, mostly slow, sometimes fast

For swimming: intervals build consistent speed, get a coach at least once to point out major flaws in your stroke (probably twice 1 month apart). "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast." Watch the Chinese kid who set the 1500m record and won gold in 2012. Unbelievably smooth

Practice nutrition for longer distance races

Practice transitions: there is an easy 2-3 minutes in any race to be had here

Nothing new on race day

Make sure you enjoy the race. Have fun and realize racing is the reward for all the hard work in training.

Hahaha, I started farting like an idiot about 15km into the run of my HIM!! I tried to squeeze my butt cheeks like mentioned in this thread but with very little success. Periodically each time my foot landed a small fart would be released. Was so bloody embarrassed but could not help it! My only comfort was that the only ones who probably noticed where people I passed and that I hoped would not see me again hahahaha. Sorry...

To the advices:
1. Remember to enjoy the race
2. Pace yourself until the last quarter of the run!
3. Don't overhydrate, don't try to get all your calories and electrolytes from drinks as it may lead to overhydration
4. Never anything new on race day - try all your nutrition, gear, "moves" way before the race with plenty of time to adjust/change if necessary
5. Sight, sight, sight and sight during the swim
6. Advice to myself after first 6 weeks of HIM training - stop obsessing over your pace and time, focus on technique

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.
