Just realized this the other day, Olympic AG race starts at 6am, so transition will probably close closer to 530am and with a large amount of waves expected this could one heck of an early morning drag for many.

Hopefully the course is released soon as well.

What time is the AG Sprint race?  Something tells me this is going to be a cluster fork......but they might as well get it worked out before worlds next year.

Interesting that the Oly is first and Sprint second.  I don't get it.

And this no idea about course thingy is really starting to get worrisome.

BTW, look at the schedule again.  You have to rack your bike the day before.

Makes perfect sense. Shorter race second so if delays happen you have less time the course needs to be open for a race.

Yeah, I realized that after I really started thinking about it.

To me the bike course couldn't be worse. I hate it. If I knew that was going to be the course I likely wouldn't have registered.

Watch Dark Night and Blues Brothers. It is like a tunnel.

No view of the city.

No GPS.

The city will likely kick out the homeless that make it their home.

That is going to be a brutal bike course. Flat and fast, but hot with possibly no circulation. People are going to slowly cook to death. I've ran a few road races that have gone down Columbus onto the lower streets and Randolph. Once you get under ground, the temp rises by what feels like a good 15 degrees. Maybe air flow will help once you're on Wacker running along the river. . . but I'm not too sure about that. Oh, and pray the river doesn't smell that day. Some days, it can be god awful. For those that don't know lower Wacker, it runs from Lake Shore Drive around the loop down to Congress. It is directly under Wacker Drive (hence the name). It's open to air on the right side (heading west/south) and it runs along side the Chicago River.

You'll never get a chance to ride that course before the race. Taking a bike down there when it isn't closed off to traffic is suicide. And forget about spectating along that course. And if you decide to drive it, be careful. I haven't been on it since they redid it a few years ago, but it's not for the faint of heart depending on where you enter and exit. It's an intimidating drive especially if there is a lot of traffic on it.

They did not have much to work with. Regardless many athletes would complain no matter what.

One of the early proposed routes (back in February) looked MUCH better than this.  I guess one of my biggest problems with it is the multiple U-turns and the fact that it is going underground.  Yes, the athletes won't looking at the scenery much but it kills any spectators further out on the ride.  And it will make for ugly television for the pro race.

The pro bike course will be different than the AG course. They normally do 6-8 laps and I guarantee they won't be on L Wacker nearly as long. Regarding spectators, there will be lots of time for spectators to see you on Columbus as you will pass back and forth 8 times during the bike course. That's far more than any race I've ever been a part of. I don't care about scenery during a race: I care about wide roads, smooth surfaces, close traffic, holes/cracks marked, etc.

I don't know if I'd worry too much about it being hot, given the way the weather is going.

So... not downtown Chicago

ETA: The run will be pretty, though.

Well, ITU requires 100% road closures, that's why Lakeshore was a no go. Also, it's my understanding that Lower Wacker has recently been redone and is actually in pretty good condition. Perhaps I'm naive, but ITU is the biggest thing in the world when it comes to triathlon at the Olympic distance. Given that this is a trial run for the World Championship in 2015, I guess I'm expecting it to be pretty well run. That said, I'm still considering picking up a rock hopper and riding it instead of my tri-bike.

Probably not, bc the AG course is 4 laps, and the pros have an 8 lap course, no?

Multiple loop courses are actually very spectator friendly, beat the 1-2x loops in most races. As for the proposed course, they probably didn't go through with the city yet, and there in lies the problem. Permits are hard to get, especially in large cities.

Sometimes I feel that being at RD must be one of the more difficult jobs in the sport.
