Subject: Long Break Between Sets?
I'm lucky to have a decent weight set at work but sometimes in the middle of a workout I will get a call and have to go do something (the nerve!) anyway, I usually am back in a few minutes but it could be as long as 45 minutes. What should I do when I get called away in the middle? Bag it? Go back as if nothing happened? Re-warm up?

I'm lifting fairly heavy, usually less than 10 reps to failure, all upper body and for about an hour 3 days a week.

Thanks

45 mins is a long break! I'd say do 5 mins cardio on the bike or rower and a couple of warm up sets. In a way it's a second workout rather than continuing the same one.

For me when I do weights I like to be very efficient and focused. Sure, 5 minutes is no big deal, but if I knew I had to be gone for 30 min+ I would probably just bag it and come back another time where I won't be distracted/interrupted. My .02......

I think it depends on your program. If you are lifting heavy really there is only that one or two sets that matters, everything else is a warmup. The stimulus comes from that one set. If you are doing higher reps the stimulus comes from the interplay between the reps and the rest in between.

I think.

Personally if I was called away for 45 minutes in the middle of training a body part, I'd forget that body part for that day. For me weight training is not just a bunch of sets, but rather a group of sets put together in a particular order with specific rest criteria for each set.

If I was called away just as I was about to start my heaviest sets then the benefit of the previous sets is lost. When I come back I'd definitely need to go through my warm up sets again. Now I'm fatigued from redoing the warm up and I now don't have the energy to complete the heavy sets as originally planned. I'd fatigue the muscle without gaining the benefits of my planned workout. Now I'll have to recover fully before training that body part again. If I were young the recovery might only be 48 hours. But at my age recovery could take several days and basically I've lost a weeks work of training.

I'd go to another body part, and go through my normal warm up and routine and then come back to the original body part in a day or so. Or depending on what I was training I might call it a day.

It sounds like your ankle has seen plenty of mileage and, by the description of your surgeon’s plan, that you have damage to the articular cartilage that caps your talus bone.
