Subject: Schedule Question/Advice
I am going to be doing B2B Half-Ironman on October 27. I am considering adding a December 20th race to the schedule but looking for some advice. The race is the Lookout Mountain 50 miler in Chattanooga, TN. B2B will be my A race for the season as I am currently overseas and will not be back until Mid-September. This would be my first distance over a hald-marathon.

These are my quesitons:

If I did a little more run focus would the 50 miler be doable?
Would the 7 weeks between races be enough to recover and continue to build my running?

Yes and yes.

Assuming you've managed to get in a solid training schedule for your HIM, you'll have plenty of fitness for a 50M. 7 weeks is enough recovery time and it'll allow you to focus on running. Get in 3-4 long (slow) runs of 18-20 miles to practice nutrition and complete the general run conditioning.

During this time period, study the race course and layout to develop your race stategy based on the number and location of aid stations and terrain, and work that into your training. Have a plan for different clothing options depending on weather.

Going 50M (and beyond) ultra distances is more about managing nutrition, hydration, clothing/equipment issues and dealing with the general 'hurt' that comes with being on your feet for 8-12 hours.

Go for it.

Guess it depends on the person.  For me- that would be way too close.  Going into a HIM, I would be training 12-14hrs/wk, with maybe 30-35mi of running/wk in a run focussed plan.  Longest runs wouldn't be more than 15.  The last bigger running week is the beginning of October.  With the HIM at the end of October, it a solid two weeks of low mileage running through mid-November for recovery.  That leaves 5 weeks of build- except it doesn't.  you need 2-3 weeks of taper, so that gives you ~3 weeks of build.  For a 50er- it's good to have a few long runs of 24, 26, and 30 miles to prepare.  Having not done a long run since the beginning of October- how does one then get up to the 50-60mpw and 50km long runs in just a few weeks?

I just don't see it.  At least not for me.  But I'm 50, slow to recover.
