Pre-race routine:

Pre-race cleanliness with my son, James (he is 25 yrs old).

Event warmup:

Watched the other athletes at the obstacles that were visible from the starting area and tried to learn technique. James explained to me how to climb the rope using your feet and it made a big difference when I tried it (although I was unable to make it all the way up).

Comments:

Completed my first Spartan race with my son! He's becoming quite the elite little Spartan, so I HAD to be introduced to his world of racing. This was a 4.8 mile course with 18 "fun filled" obstacles. If you cannot complete an obstacle, you must do 30 burpees. I had to do burpees twice. I was unable to climb all the way up the rope climb, however I DID make it up about 2/3 of the way which was a noble effort. Of the four of us (Pete, James, Jelytza, and myself) James was the only one to make it to the top. I also missed the spear throw. Otherwise, I did pretty good for an old gal! I'm not sure I want to do this type of race again, but yet another part of me wants to go for a "Trifecta" which is when you complete all three distances of the race within one year. Time will tell! We stayed together as a team, and Jelytza was not well prepared, so our time is reflective of waiting for and helping her get through the course. She was a real trooper!

What would you do differently?:

More upper body strength training.

Warm down:

I conquered the course. I am a Spartan!!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being naive about proper technique and difficulty level!

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

If you haven’t done any bricks yet, this isn’t the time to start piling them on, but here are some examples you could do in the lead up to your race.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?
