Subject: Training for a 6hr - need input
Hi everyone. I've decided to give my first time based event a try, a 6hr race that consists of 4-mile loops. The race is late October and I'm shooting for 28 miles (12:51 pace) if training goes well. It's on trails through an orchard so nothing too technical.

My question is should I follow a marathon plan? How many 20+ runs? I'm prone to tendonitis in my hip (adductor actually) so I'm really taking a chance with upping mileage. Right now I'm looking at 3 runs, 2 bikes, 1 swim and 1 elliptical day. One day is a double so I get at least one day of rest. Thoughts? Thanks!

What base do you have going into this race? What races have you done to this point?

15-20 miles a week for now, been running since 2001, triathlons since 2006 with a couple of 9 month breaks for babies. I've done 1 full marathon (too many years ago to count) and up to 70.3 (also a while ago), a handful of halves.

Shooting for a minimum of 24 miles in the 6hr (4-mile loop course).

If training goes well, aiming for 28 miles.

You'll probably do just fine with a marathon based training plan. With the base you describe, you should really ease into it and not do any drastic mileage increases. Slow and steady build of weekly mileage and long runs, with lots of time on your feet. You may want to look at adding some days of just walks too!

Thanks for the input! I have a few long hikes planned for later in the summer (3-4 hrs) to help get more time on my feet without the pounding impact.

First of all good luck in your training and race. The timed events are my absolute favorites. I did a 24 hour last weekend and a 12 hour the weekend before that. I won the 12 hour and took second place in the 24 hour with 101 miles. The only reason that I tell you that is to give you some credibility to what I am going to tell you next.

I am not fast but I can stay on the course and keep moving well for the entire time of the event because I never run for more than 3 minutes. From the time the gun goes off I have my watch set for a 3:1 interval. I run for 3 minutes and walk for a minute. As I do this, I watch 80% of the field take off like they are running a 10K and then watch the failure rate. With the level of training that you have stated, I would recommend a 2:2 ratio for you. It really does work. I walk from the beginning of the race but I am walking on my own terms. I am not forced to walk the death march as the hours go by.

I prefer a shorter loop then 4 miles for a timed course. If they only count full laps then you could lose close to an hour of your six hours because you finish a lap and don't start another one because you know you can't finish it in the time cut off.

Good Luck.

Your logs are quiet.

What do you need to do so you can run long and not have tendonitis?  Honestly, I'd want to be running injury free before considering something like a marathon or ultramarathon.  How much additional damage are you doing to your body between a 20 mile training run and 28 mile race effort?  (Comes back to why you're getting tendonitis...)
