Subject: Training for a 6hr - need input
Hi everyone. I've decided to give my first time based event a try, a 6hr race that consists of 4-mile loops. The race is late October and I'm shooting for 28 miles (12:51 pace) if training goes well. It's on trails through an orchard so nothing too technical.

My question is should I follow a marathon plan? How many 20+ runs? I'm prone to tendonitis in my hip (adductor actually) so I'm really taking a chance with upping mileage. Right now I'm looking at 3 runs, 2 bikes, 1 swim and 1 elliptical day. One day is a double so I get at least one day of rest. Thoughts? Thanks!

15-20 miles a week for now, been running since 2001, triathlons since 2006 with a couple of 9 month breaks for babies. I've done 1 full marathon (too many years ago to count) and up to 70.3 (also a while ago), a handful of halves.

Shooting for a minimum of 24 miles in the 6hr (4-mile loop course).

You'll probably do just fine with a marathon based training plan. With the base you describe, you should really ease into it and not do any drastic mileage increases. Slow and steady build of weekly mileage and long runs, with lots of time on your feet. You may want to look at adding some days of just walks too!

Thanks for the input! I have a few long hikes planned for later in the summer (3-4 hrs) to help get more time on my feet without the pounding impact.
