Comments:

started at 07:07. i ran the first 6.3 mile leg. mostly single track by witherbee rough camp site and hell hole bay. started about 30th, passed a few before the turnaround, back to start area at 35", passed a few more, made the first transition in 61", somewhere in top ten. 08:08 brian ran the next 14 mile leg. the first place we saw him he'd moved us up to 2nd overall. at turnaround "D", the volunteer sent the runners on down the trail instead of turning them around. he ended up running 15.2 miles 126" / 10:14. mark perrecone ran back to "A", turnaround, then back to "C", 12.1 miles, 114" / 12:08. Renee ran out to "D", turnaround back to "C" up to "B", 10.7 miles, 103" / 13:51. I ran the last 5.2 miles back to "A" 44" / 14:35
Post race
Warm down:

post race BBQ and a couple Yeunglings

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of long distance running / Achilles heel and recent surgery on my thigh (still had all the stiches).

Event comments:

Mike McMonagle was the overall male winner in 7:31:30. Even though we finished 3 minutes earlier (he told me he was coming for me at the last transition), it took four of us running / resting to make the time. Had I entered as an individual, I likely would have been a DNF or at best, come in just under the 14 hour cutoff.

Course: The Wambaw Swamp Stomp is a 50 mile trail race along the Swamp Fox Passage leg of the Palmetto Trail and a section of the Jericho Horse Trail. You will run two 23.8 mile "loops" though the course is shaped more like the Flux Capacitor from Back to the Future. Each time around you will come back to the start/finish line. Starting out you will run up the trail for about 1.6 miles, turn around and head back down before starting the two loops.

I can train for half marathons on pavement and on trails, but as soon as I change it up to gravel or loose dirt my knee swells and the pain it causes is unreal. Any ideas why this happens?
