This is my first post, please bare with me.

I am doing IMLP in July and would like to do the Beast of Burden in Buffalo, NY 2 weeks later. The Beast will be my first Ultra. Are these 2 events too close together? Any suggestions on how to train for them? Thanks for any help or guidance.

Nobody can answer that but you. Many people will say, no, nay, don't do it, because they have been told too close together -- although most will never have tried doing it so it's all based on lore and some study.

I volunteered at a marathon this last weekend. There was a 62 year old man doing the marathon - he had done two marathons the weekend before, doing another two the following weekend. If he asked, could I do five marathons in three weekends, most people would say no. If he asked, could I do two marathons one week apart, most people would say no. I wonder, how many have ever tried?

If you want to, yes, if you don't, no. It all depends on you.

That's up to you. I personally couldn't do both that close. Having done an IM and a 50 miler, the IM took longer for me to recover from.

If you really want to do both, you need a strategy that gives you the best chance for success at both.

There are a lot of people who run back-to-back marathons and ultras.  I know a BT'er who did IM's on back to back weekends.  So...in that regard, doing an ultra 2 weeks after doing an IM isn't impossible.

If you are going to do both, you need to keep your effort in the first race (IMKY) easy enough that you'll be fresh still and ready to train the next day.  Keep up on nutrition.  If you could reasonably expect to do the IM in 12 hours, target 14-15 and know that you could have gone faster if you didn't have another race.

A few years back, I did a marathon on Friday night and a 30-mile ultra on Saturday morning.  My marathon was 5:18 where I could do a stand-alone marathon in 4:00-4:10.  I was fatigued, and my 30-miler was about an hour slower than the previous year when I ran it fresh.

Have you done an Ironman before? If so then you would have a better understanding of your recovery time. As for me, after I did IMWI in 2012, I came back running I think about two weeks later and eventually ended up getting all sorts of injuries that forced me to take about 3 months off. I was so excited with the race and had so much pent up energy and thought I was ready, but I wasn't and it cost me.

given that the time of these events has now just passed... the appropriate question here is:

What did you decide to do... and how did it go?

(my guess is, that you didn't do the Ultra.  too close to IMLP... but, I'm on the edge of my seat)

My 1st triathlon, Xterra and the mess I made of myself. This wasn’t your regular triathlon, it was off-road.
