Finally decided to take a scissors to my wet suit before my first race of the season this past weekend. Took two inches off the bottom and it made all the difference in the world. The suit came off with complete ease.

I had this "aha" moment last summer when I finally cut the neckline of mine. It had choked me for 5 years and then VOILA! Complete comfort.

Woah..........seriously?  I cut the legs of our suits with a thought or care.....but I don't know about cutting the neck line.  That has the potential to be disastrous if you cut too much.

Damn....I hate when I feel old.

I only considered water pouring into the suit.

I am too scared to cut mine. I don't know how short is too short and bla bla bla. I am a poor teacher who cannot afford another one if I screw it up!

There is tape on the seam inside the leg.  That is how high you can cut up the leg.  I have trimmed my suit twice, taking an inch each time.  Really worth it!!!

Just a little at a time. I also cut some off my arm length on my long sleeved suit.

After cutting, how long is the suit on your leg? I want to cut mine a little but don't want it stopping at my calf. It's already a couple inches above my ankle.

This is where we cut ours to, but he swims really well and doesn't need any bouancy, YMMV.  It comes off REALLY easy.

I am debating doing this to my secondhand TYR Freak. The legs seem too long and getting them off is hell.

What is there to debate?  Cut the legs and the suit will come off 100% easier.

Yeah, I think I'm going to cut my race suit.  Been using the Xterra Lava pants in training and they are cut to just under the calf and they come off so easy.  I do not think that you would ever notice any loss of bouyancy with that small amount of material removed.

Not sure if I like the suit enough to keep it in which case I don't want to cut it before reselling it. I prefer my sleeveless but my first open water race is in about 55-58 degree water. Not sure I'm that rugged.

I hear you, but it's one thing to think its a good idea and another to actually cut into your $250+ wetsuit. If the suit wasn't already a few years old, I'm not sure I would have done it. Now that I've done it once, I'd be comfortable cutting my next one, but that first time is a bit nerve racking.

HA!  We were at a Youth/Jr Elite race a few weeks ago and had to convince parents to let us cut their kid's suits because struggling with a wetsuit in transition in a draft legal race like that can kill your race.....and even cause you to be lapped out of the race if you struggle too long after a bad swim.  We cut them to the point where the kids can literally just step out of them....never had a problem.

Yeah we trimmed a little bit at a time and it was golden. The idea came from my friend's new wetsuit which was designed like a "scoop neck" and mine was more like a TURTLENECK, so uncomfortable. I have 2 wet suits and was prepared to swim without - I also don't need the buoyancy as a crutch so wasn't too worried about it.

Sorry if it's hard to see but here's a pic of me coming out of the water, I'm on the left.

I have been able to swim 200-300 yards without stopping for the past couple of weeks, but this morning I couldn’t swim more than 50. Could not eating make a big differance?
