Originally posted by StaceyK I hope everyone is getting a good night's sleep before their races I'M SO EXCITED!!! The 2014/2015 race calendar is out which officially means SUMMER IS COMING So I am looking at the schedule and this is what I have planned but I need your help to work out training. 5 weeks from today - 12k city2surf (way under done for this so it will be run/walk. I could run the 4k but feels a bit like wimping out. My longest race to date is 4k and my longest run was a couple of weeks ago @7k) 5 weeks later - duathlon want to step up to 5k/20k/2.5k 5 weeks later - triathlon 600/18/6 5 weeks later - triathlon 750/20/5 7 weeks later - triathlon Oly this will be my A So I am basically starting almost at scratch because I have been so lazy. I am ok at swimming, suck a bit on the bike and really suck at running. How would you structure training? Would you spend the next 5 weeks just running then pick up the bike after the 12k and then pick up the swimming after the duathlon? If I did this it would give me: 27 weeks running 22 weeks bike 17 weeks swimming What do you think. Consistency is a very big problem for me as my logs show.

Yippee for summer!  I'm a person who needs daylight.  I have threatened that Kevin should provide me with a home in each hemisphere but that hasn't worked out for me so well.  (Speaking of homes in each hemisphere, how's Phil and what's the status of the Indiana job?)

If it were me, I'd benefit from some biking to break up the running, even if it were a recovery ride and a brick.  So yes, I would do run focus with a bit of biking for the next five weeks.  Start to get a bit of a biking base with the end goal being that 40k ride in the Oly.

Then, when you are training for the du, bike/run focus with a bit of swimming.  Again, the end goal being the 1500 meters for the Oly.  Since you are a strong swimmer (haven't you done the swim leg for relays before?), I'll leave that up to you but sometimes getting the routine down is important so for me, heading to the pool regularly, even for not so long swims, would be beneficial.

Thanks Janyne.

Phil is slowly getting better, managing to do a little bit of stuff around the house to which is a bonus. Not sure about the Indiana job yet so I am planning as if it isn't happening for now. Even if it does happen I most likely won't be able to go until early next year because I would want to stay at work until the auditors have been in February. Ooo maybe I will get 2 summers next year that would be fantastic.

I would try to listen to Janyne. I like the idea of a run focus with an added bit of biking and then bike/run wih some swimming. I think this would help break up the chance of monotony of a single focus. Mostly though, I would strive for consistency. Do something every day, especially in the beginning in order to set the tone. During the first few weeks this will really help get you in the right mindset.

Good Luck!!!!

That's basically what I was thinking too. Have your priorities, but be careful of actually dropping off the other ones completely. A little bit of maintenance work can help noticeably.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
