Interesting article about the impact on teeth from training.  I know that my worst dental checkup came after I started mixing sports drinks for my long bike rides.  Have you noticed any dental issues since ramping up your training?

Funny you should post that b/c Macca said something on Twitter about his bad dentist check up the other day.

My dental hygienist knows I am a triathlete and she always gives me a speech about Gu type and surgery products and making sure I rinse my mouth with water as soon as I take GU, which I always do. So far I haven't had any issues with my teeth.

As soon as I get the IV out of my vein after a workout or race, I brush my teeth.  So far, no issues.

Really I do three things after EVERY workout

1) Drink some milk and/or water

2) Shower

3) Brush teeth.

I should probably add stretching as number 4, but I don't do it!

I had my first cavity/filling this year. So this is after endurance training and I never had any before I started endurance training. However, I did my first triathlon in 2003, so not sure if this is a good observation.

I am 45. I have never had a cavity in my life. I go to the Dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and check-up. My hygienist has noticed the last few cleanings I have had more plaque build-up than I used to. I believe it is due to my increased use of GU and Gatorade on my long bikes and runs. I am extra diligent now about brushing after either a long bike or run where I have used a lot of GU. She also said it could be due to increased breathing through the mouth vs breathing through the nose.

I remember hearing about this my freshman year in college - 1997 - not anything new and shouldn't really be a surprise if you read labels at all.

I don't drink commercial sports drinks or gels.

I eat salt caps for electrolytes and make my own rice cakes, sweet potato cakes, etc for long bike rides.

I suggest doing the same before you rot your teeth and your stomach.
