Colfax Marathon
50F / 10C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 17m 7s
Overall Rank = 3137/5829
Age Group = F40-49
Age Group Rank = 348/768
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30 am. Ate 2 hard boiled eggs, some almond butter, and half a banana in the car (with coffee). Parked south of Colfax and walked ~1/2 mile or so to City Park. Probably got there earlier than I needed to. It was cold! I wore a technical T and my Sugoi jacket over it, with capris. Very happy I brought my gloves! In the hour before I had a bottle of Nuun, and 20 minutes before had a Gu.
Event warmup:

Jumped around and did a little dynamic stretching, mostly to stay warm :).

Comments:

Overall I was very happy. I had a good time, I ran pretty well, and I felt decently trained (for me). I do rather like this distance.
What would you do differently?:

I went out conservatively, and ran with a couple of other people from my club. I think I could have done this faster. My 1/2 split was 1:10:27, and my last 2 miles were at 9:37 and 9:39 (my first mile was 11:00, and my 2nd 2 miles were 10:47 and 10:44. I think I could have gone to 10:30s after the first mile, and gone to 9:30-9:45 after 3-4 miles and sustained it, based on my run last week. I also think I would do better if I had more mileage base- I could definitely feel it in my legs towards the end.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, stretched a bit, had a core shake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, and pacing. And probably 5 pounds I don't really need.

Event comments:

Especially grateful for the shirtless firefighters at mile 12.

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
