I believe that is correct without going international.  I've tried to get into Florida but wasn't quick enough on the keyboard.  Heat aside, I've heard that the Woodlands is a great area and I would rather race there than Florida.

I did IMTX the inaugural year and have worked/spectated the event the other three.  So I have had some involvement with IMTX every year it has existed.  I have done IMFL 2x (2010 and 2013).

The IMFL swim course is 100x better than IMTX.  Not even remotely close.  The IMTX bike course is much better than IMFL.  The IMTX run course is much better on paper but the heat is just a killer.

The Woodlands is a nice area.  PCB is a nice area too in a different way but it's a ghost town in November, whereas The Woodlands is basically an always busy suburb of Houston.

With the current May race date of IMTX I would personally choose IMFL (and have) over IMTX and I live 25 miles from the IMTX race site.

The April date adds way more appeal.  Yes, it's only three weeks earlier but that three weeks has meant a big difference in both air and water temps.

The April race date potentially neuters the course unless it's a really windy day.

Absolutely.  As you well know... it's real windy during March and April.  Late April is when the wind starts to calm a bit so a late April date for IMTX might be about as perfect as you can get for a Houston area Ironman race.

Yep.  Could be blowing out of the north at 25 mph and 65 degrees, or it could be the same temp at 5 mph out of the north.

I can't say for sure about Houston, but it stays incredibly windy in Dallas until June, so it seems likely that the winds in April are going to be a huge factor on an already windy course.

I'd personally rather have heat over wind.

Thinking about putting this on the calendar for 2015. I did CdA this year, and didn't have the day that I wanted. Mostly because I didn't manage expectations and mental approach well. I do this because I enjoy the experience, not for a specific time, but I allowed myself to get caught up in time goals and expectations. That did not lead to a positive day for me. The plan for 2015 was, and remains, a late season IM (hopefully Arizona, but could be another depending on whether I get in), but I don't want to wait to November or October for redemption. This would be IM number 3. Working on family/spousal approval, but also trying to figure out if I can really do 2 IMs in a year. Family probably wouldn't come with me to Texas, but would be able to for Arizona. I did Wildflower HIM last year in 95 degree heat (but no humidity) and lived in Dallas for years, but that was years ago. Heat is definitely a consideration, but I like the looks of the course.

I'm thinking about doing the Oil Man HIM on November 2. I've done it a couple times in the past, and it's a great race.

The bike course uses some of the same roads as the middle part of IM-TX. Swim is in Lake Conroe and usually wet suit legal. Run is a multi-loop course through some local neighborhoods.

Weather is a wild card......it can be hot and humid or cold, wet & windy.

Give it some thought if you're in the area and looking for something to do next month.

My wife and I both signed up for this. My 6th IM and her first. Can't wait ... need to book a hotel ... and train. Took the better part of the past 9 months off from tri-specific training to summit Mt Rainier... I'm in great shape but not tri-specific.

Welcome to the forum. Texas is a great IM. I did it a couple years ago where it was blazing hot.

Eh.  It's still pretty far off.  Talk to me again in March.

I just read something on the FB group that the water is bad. Like get you sick, you will be puking on the bike bad. They recommended getting on an antibiotic and doing probiotics the week before due to the water bacteria being bad and making people sick. I heard the water was cloudy and nasty, but hadn't heard this. Anyone else know about this? Experience it? Are people over reacting? Just wondering what others have heard or have experienced.

This.  It's gross mind you, like all lake swims in the area, but you don't need to medicate yourself before hand.

I was at IMKY this past year. The water was dark, but it didn't stink and I didn't get sick. It's not a bad swim, except for the people!

I am in. I am debating whether to fly or drive. It is 2100 miles or so each way driving. But, I don't have a bike box. Anyone have recommendations for bike boxes for flying or UPS or whatever? I was a bit concerned about the water being a bit gross, may bring a nose plug. The road is bad in a chipseal kind of way or in a pothole, junk on the road flat tire kind of way?

IM-TX roads are not bad at all. There are a few very short sections with a few cracks & holes, but they're well marked and should not cause any problems for riders who pay attention. In addition there is about 20 miles in the Richards area, right in the middle of the course, that has a light chip-seal pavement. This section is not completely smooth, but it's definately not bad. It was resurfaced a few yers ago and was a lot rougher than it is now......over time, the road traffic tends to make this type of pavement smoother.

Hi, I'm in! This is my first IM distance race....while it might have been smarter to pick a different race for my first IM (read: cooler), I live about 8 miles from the start and figured being on my home turf with lots of friends and family on the course would be hard to beat. I did Oilman 70.3 in 2013 and intended to do it again this year, but broke my foot (5th metatarsal) in mid-July. Boo! Luckily, I have been able to swim and spin (with little resistence) for the past several months and was cleared to work in some running as of last month (finally!). My fitness is definitely not where I was hoping to be at this point in time, but it is what it is!

I am looking forward to hearing about everyone's training and experiences leading up to IMTX.

Not to worry my fitness sucks too, we still have 20 ish weeks of training. That will get you to the finish line assuming your foot holds up good. Don't abuse your foot now as there is time to catchup still. I find that when injured elyptical or walking does a pretty good job of maintaining some run base until I am back on my run feet so to speak. My long swim was 1800 yards this week, long bike 45 and long run 8 miles.... which will kick my butt sadly. Oh well, had to let some muscle groups recover for about 6 to 8 weeks. I am not going to break 11 hours so it doesn't really matter how fast as long as I finish. Yes faster is better, but not something I am going to worry about 20 ish weeks out.

AggieGrad96,
You may want to try deep water running to build your base/fitness in running. You can really work some intervals in the water without the pounding on your foot. I teach at the Cypress Creek Y but I'm sure they offer similar classes in The Woodlands too. I find that waterproof music is a tremendous help when working in the water, helps make the endless loop a little less monotonous.
