I'm sure none of the choices on how to deal with it are easy. The only possible "win" is if she finally gets help. If not, you are either shelling out tons of dollars to keep her fed and in a house OR let her lose everything due to her addiction. that is the problem with addiction (as this is no different than an addiction to alcohol or drugs, just doesn't have the physical/legal complications) until the addict WANTS help you are supposed to just sit by and be supportive while not enabling. this fixes NOTHING. I'm so sorry your family is going through this Meh. I was watching Intervention last night and what you just said was the big glaring thing... until the addict realizes that they need help, nothing is going to change. The other thing that kept coming up from the interventionist (is that a word? no squiggly red line, so I guess it is) was that the family had to set hard rules if the person didn't get professional help and stick to those consequences. Thankfully I've never had a family member go through this, but I can't imagine how hard it would be to be the family of the addict. i understand the IDEA behind rules and consequences but when your mom can't pay her heating bill and doesn't have food, how do you say "no i won't give you money." i NEVER directly gave her cash, obviously, just gift cards to the grocery store or pay her bills directly on line or on the phone, but at the end of the day, even though i no longer like her very much, i can't just let her suffer. she is my burden now until she dies. THAT is a really messed up mother-daughter relationship but that is really the only way i can describe it. I wouldn't ever be able to cut my mom off either, but it sounds like you're doing the right thing by not ever giving her cash. However messed up it is, at the end of the day, she's still your mom. I can only hope that it gets better for you all at some point. |

SWEEEEET! Okay the code for Betty gear is PINKmacleod14 which is good for 10% off any non-sale items. The tops are pretty true to size - I wear a medium - but the bottoms tend to run small so size up. I usually wear a medium in tri shorts, but had to get a large. I've got me some big-ole thighs too and these are good for staying in place. |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: NewTAN's Third Law of Motion Yeah, it's kind of hard to say - "you didn't follow the rules, so no heat or food for you!"... Dealing with people that refuse to deal with their addictions is EXREMELY hard. The choices are few and difficult. The only way I can think if they don't get help is get power of attorney or something. Handle all their money. Give them an allowance and IF they gamble it away? Then it's no big deal. But the people with real problems will resort to things to GET money to gamble (or drink, or dope). Addiction is a scary thing. Sorry to see people wired wrong that they have to deal with it. I have seen some pretty crazy things gambling does to people in this town. Even at a small scale, it's amazing to me. Like a friend who went to a casino to watch a world cup game then walked away $900 bucks lighter... Same guy that makes fun of me spending $200 on a golf gadget or something even if I'm not that good. Well, I still HAVE my golf gadget and he LOST enough to buy 5 of them. |

I'll have to try one, but I don't think I'd take in the information as well as if I were reading it off the page. Then again, how the hell would I know since I've never tried?? Okay, off to find an audio book now! Check the library. That's how this convo started. They can be expensive, so borrow one for free and rip it to ITunes! Oh, and of COURSE you will erase it when done! - cough cough... Don't be a pirate! arrrrrrggggghhhhhh |

Champion 7704 Williamston, Michigan | Subject: RE: NewTAN's Third Law of Motion Originally posted by blueyedbikergirl will pass the time driving to TEXAS!!!Originally posted by Socks Originally posted by mehaner Originally posted by Kido Yay! I forgot the joy of a good audiobook. I'm sure some may argue that they are not as good as READING. (I'm curious if the mind works differently if you read a story or have it read to you). But for time management? It's awesome. I'm only halfway through the second chapter of Stephen Kings book "11/22/63" and it's so good! I almost want to listen on my lunch walks and at the office but I know it would be too distracting. He is such a good writer. It's been years since I read any of his stuff. Funny, I used to read everything he did but sort of slowed down after he finished the Gunslinger series 10 years ago. I read a few things after that but must have hit a streak of some of his "boring" (to me) books and slowed down.
i think it's comparable to reading, in experience, at least. however, i wonder if you retain what you read better than what you listen to, or vice versa, or does it even really matter when it's just reading for fun? personally, if i need to remember something later, i NEED to see it in writing, my brain processes things better that way. but for just entertainment or enjoyment, either way works. I listen to books while running and riding long (on a path closed to cars of course) I love music but I don't have the time or patience to hunt for something I like to download and as a consequence I never buy music. I like mysteries I don't think I've ever listened to an audio book... I'll have to try one, but I don't think I'd take in the information as well as if I were reading it off the page. Then again, how the hell would I know since I've never tried?? Okay, off to find an audio book now! |

Elite 4344 | Subject: RE: NewTAN's Third Law of Motion Beach Week is winding down. This is our last day. I have been able bike or run every day. Weather has been typical Daytona. Sunny and breezy most of the day with an afternoon thundershower to cool things off. I hope I can keep up the regular schedule once we get back to Tennessee. The Grand Geezerette is getting bigger and more entertaining. We have been the full time care-givers for the last two days while Geezerette #1 has been on a whirlwind business trip to New York, Chicago, and Dallas in two days. She returns on Saturday in Atlanta. GG has been a typical three-year-old which is mostly good. She had a meltdown on the beach yesterday. I think it was like bonking in a race. She basically ran out of gas. We could not get her back to her the condo for a snack and bed fast enough. Hope you all have held down the fort here. TW Edited by tech_geezer 2014-06-26 10:14 AM |

or, go a third day, but at a super-slow recovery pace, and then have ice cream. |

Not pushing it too much. Run when I feel up to running. Run/walk if I need a bit of a break... It's something, right?
