How does one even begin to go about finding someone who has completely gone off the grid and could very well be homeless?

Do you know the place where they last lived and/or worked?  Ask co-workers, as it is amazing how much they still know about people, if you get the right ones.  If there are community outreach programs, they may know of the person also.  Any family that lived close by, or that they were close to?

Could check with state aid agencies and shelters in the last known locations.  IRS? They always seem to find you

I was wondering why the office was empty. Been here for an hour and a half and no one has shown up... layoffs! Most of the production staff is out until sales start to pick up again.

This happens occasionally here. I'm unaffected... but I also only have 15 more months of guaranteed pay. The downside of working for a small company, I suppose.

I hope this is a temporary layoff and not the permanent variety.  I hated days like this and saw too many.  All the ones I knew about were permanent layoffs.  It was very hard on the families.  My sympathy and best wishes for those affected.  At least the economy is picking up right now and some jobs are opening up.

Thanks guys.  Unfortunately, I'm helping out a family whose son hasn't been seen since '08 (he is ~43 yo).  He likely has PTSD from Operation Desert Storm.  They are getting ready to hire a PD to see if boots on the ground in the city he was last seen can help.  They have a strong feeling he is homeless which is very likely.

Temporary.

Most full timers are cut to 4 days/week (not my project because we're grant funded)

This seems to happen 1-2x per year.

The owner really does care about the employees and this is hard for him to do, but unfortunately it's necessary.

Pretty excited for this weekend.

There's a big 24 hour MTB race - and I'm crewing my friend's solo attempt

Anyone else have big plans?

Georgia Tech basketball games Sat and Monday (Sat/Mon games have happened a lot this year. Crazy scheduling). We are in Atlanta for that. Not much else is going on. JWKMH is not keen on walking places in the cold any time, but today she has a cold. We shall probably eat in. TW

Anyone else getting sick of seeing GoFundMe links for EVERYTHING?

Some are upfront and honest: like a pro triathlete with not enough income to cover cancer-related medical care. I get that.

BUT when it's for surgery for your dog, and you own a $5k+ bike, and your facebook is flooded with photos of your around-the-world adventures... maybe you need to re-prioritize instead of asking everyone around you for money.

Wedding dresses? Furniture? Horse shows?

Also, how easy would it be to post fraudulent stuff on these sites?

Rant over. Back to your regularly scheduled Tuesday.

I made the mistake of poking around the gofundme site after I saw one pop up on my FB that I found to be completely ridiculous. BAD IDEA.

I have donated to a select few - 2 people I know personally, and occasionally for medical costs for foster dogs from my local animal shelter because I'm a sucker for rescue dogs & I wish I could foster but I can't because my dog is an a-hole.

I can't foster either because my husband would file divorce papers.  My dogs are also a-holes!

Bonjour TAN!

Been a minute since I been around.  Too busy.

Well, the pigs are sprouting wings here and the record low temps have reached hell itself.

Never thought that people leaving would actually cause changes in a company.  After all the turmoil and somewhat of a mass exodus, plus the realization that it's hard to replace people AND rumor that MORE people were leaving (as in me), and a lot of other corporate happenings, changes are afoot.  I was "pleaded" with to stay, at least for several months just to see how some restructuring was going to happen which might be in my benefit - they had some big changes in mind and a merger with a national firm and they needed me as part of their executive staff to sell it.  The result?  got a 25% raise as a salary adjustment today and will also be promoted next month and will be getting another 20% raise after the merger - new benefit packages are rolling out with 401k and quarterly profit sharing...  PLUS they have an office in Denver so maybe I can go HOME!!!!

It was a painful and stressful couple months and some VERY hard decisions, but coming out of the tempest the future looks brighter.

I wonder how things are going over at that prospective new employer for your old nemesis.

Good news for you.  It sounds great.

One thing to watch out for is the short term happy job ploy - that the current employer is only making you happy to push the merger forward and make some short-term money.  After the merger, it may be the intention of the national firm to let some employees go.  If you are making money for them, you are good.  If you are managing people who make money, you may be more vulnerable.  Engineering can be so cut-throat.

It seems obvious that staying with your current firm makes the most sense.  You just have to stay on your toes and continue to make yourself  look irreplaceable.

Interesting thought, but I don't see that as an option.  We only have 9 people and not other project managers so it would be impossible to get rid of me unless they have someone to replace me, which would be hard based on all my current client relationships.

Basically, they are doing this merger and need me as a "partner", even if I'm not an official partner (I don't own any of the company).

To avoid a myriad of injuries (joint pain to your knees, ankles, hips, shin splints, foot pain, bruises), it’s invaluable to find the right running shoes.
