My first sprint tri is in the books. Finished in 1:38:50 & placed 9th in my division despite finishing third in the swim & fifth in the run. Riding a heavy 20 year old mountain bike killed me. It may be time to start dropping more than just subtle hints to the wife that I want a new lighter faster bike!

Without a doubt, triathlon is legitimately the most exhausting activity you can do. Coming out of the water, I thought I would zoom through T1, but my head was spinning & I literally fell over trying to put my shoes on. Then off the bike, the first mile of the run may as well have been a 10K. That said, I am hooked. I am signing up for my next sprint in a month & looking for a couple more for the summertime.

Way to go!!  Now you can tell your wife that you've earned the new faster bike.

Take a look at Craigslist in your area, may be able to find a good bargain on a road bike a couple of years old.

nope.  sorry.

Can't call yourself a triathlete until you spend $5K on an TT bike.

Just kidding.  Congratulations and hope you had fun.

Nice job. Congrats! My thought on bike shopping is this: your bike should never cost more than your car.

Congrats!

Tip - I wear earplugs for my swims. I forgot once, and was very dizzy in T1.

For bikes, start here http://atlanta.craigslist.org/search/bia?=bia&query=road+bike

Thanks to everyone for the support! I'm sure I annoyed the hell out of my wife all day yesterday recounting all the tales of the race. Bless her heart, she feigned interest in each one of them.

I feel like a kid who just tasted ice cream for the first time!

Nice job for sure. Even a very basic/inexpensive road bike that fits will be WAY faster. I'd definitely look at Craigslist to find something to get started on. A few months on an inexpensive/used road bike and you'll have a lot better idea of if/how you want to upgrade. And you'll be able to resell that "intro" road bike for about what you paid . . .

Obviously, I'm a big fan on buying a good condition used road bike. Lower entry cost, and as mentioned, you can use it until you figure out what you really want and then sell it for nearly what you paid for it. Also, you can learn some bike tinkering skills on a $400-500 used bike with less fear than you would have wrenching on your first bike if it cost $3000+. Use the cash you save to get some items you can transfer/use if you decide to upgrade later - like pedals and shoes, a good helmet, gloves, a good saddle bag, flat kit (tubes, co2, levers), and bike tools.

Bonus - the first N+1 bike is a generally easier "sell" to the spouse since it's used, and lower priced.

Just get one that is your size, and don't try to fit yourself to the wrong sized bike.

Nice job Meathead!

I started out on a 37lb MTB, used it for 2 sprints and 2 oly's then bought a $450 used entry level RB.  I raced with that for a year then bought an aluminum TB.  Road that for 7 years and somehow convinced my wife to let me build a carbon frame TB this winter.  There are many paths to the blissfulness that a nice bike can bring!

My thanks to the triathlete community for being there when I need you. That’s the beautiful thing about triathletes. None of us are all right, and no one expects anyone else to be.
