Just found out I have to be in Austin the week of the IM 70.3. Hmmmm. Can anyone give the scoop on when it typically closes out?

I'm not sure, but I don't think it usually sells out.

I don't believe it sells out. Mainly because its a horrible race.

I don't have much to compare it to, as it it was my first 70.3, but I had a great time last year.

Huh. Why? Looks ok from a cursory reading of the overview, other than a whole bunch of turns on the bike and a triple loop run. i read a few race reports as well but that didnt really help.

Horrible chip seal roads filled with pot holes is a big reason most people don't like this race. But also, the course is on the wrong side of Austin. It's incredibly boring. The swim is in a man made lake that feeds a power plant and is really warm too.

I think my hands were still numb for a week after riding this course.

If you want a really good 70.3 in central texas in the Fall, do Kerrville instead. Its a great course, way cheaper, and less people.

Austin doesn't sell out.  It draws a decent crowd probably for the reason you cited... looks good on paper.  I'd be willing to bet Austin doesn't have as much repeat business as other 70.3's (like Galveston or Oceanside) and that's because the race basically sucks.

I've done 15 WTC Ironman or 70.3 races.  Austin would rank #15 on that list.

Thanks for the info. This was going to be strictly opportunistic because I have to be there anyway. If I don't do it I'll probably do one closer to home on the east coast. But I'm really glad I got some scoop.

Yep. Worst roads I've ever ridden on. And I've ridden in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Colorado, Texas, California, Wisconsin, Kentucky...
I like the *idea* of a 70.3 in Austin - such great potential - but those roads made me vow to never come back as a participant.

Pretty much and I live two hours from the race site.  If they moved the race to the west side of Austin I would do it every year.

Hmmm, unpopular race after worlds have happened for the year. Good qualifier? I'm still probably on the outside even if it is. Can always dream though.

Austin is still a popular race in terms of # of athletes participating and it tends to be a fast and competitive field in spite of being a crappy race.  Looks like 2600 registered in 2013 and about 2100 finishers.
