Event warmup:

None. It was pretty cold at the start so I was just hanging out in my wetsuit shivering.
Swim
  • 14m 27s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

Yeah! I think this was my best sprint swim ever? I have to check. This was a wetsuit practice run. I noticed the last time I wore it that I was panicking bc the neck was too tight. Sure enough, when I put it on today, the neck immediately made me freak out. But I stood around long enough wearing it to get used to the feeling. Got in the water and just felt great. Kept my kick strong. Stuck near the ropes so I swam straight. At one point a girl knocked my goggles off but I just fixed them and moved on. First 100 meters, my heart rate was up but it calmed down at the middle and I found some space and got my groove.
What would you do differently?:

I definitely didn't need the wetsuit for the water temp, but I wanted to wear it to get the practice. Next time I'm in this pool I won't wear one!
Transition 1
  • 05m 57s
Comments:

This was just a terrible transition. I have no idea how to get out of my wetsuit. The woman next to me offered to help, but I told her no, I needed to learn myself.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear a wetsuit!
Bike
  • 49m 36s
  • 13.3 miles
  • 16.09 mile/hr
Comments:

OK this was a TOUGH course because there was a strong headwind basically the entire second loop. There was some tailwind during the first loop, my speeds were up to like 20 mph on some stretches and I felt pretty good, but that second loop was terrible. I kept hoping the winds would subside but every time I turned a corner it seemed like they just got stronger!

Also, when I first started, I got to the start line, hopped on the bike, and noticed a huge tree branch was somehow lodged between my pedal and my chain. At the bike on line, I tried pulling it out, and it snapped in half! Got the second half off, but it took my chain with it. (I didn't notice.) Got on again and the guy is yelling, "YOUR CHAIN'S NOT ON!!!!!" Almost fell off. Got off, put chain back on while people were piling up behind me. What a mess!
What would you do differently?:

As always, I need to get stronger here. I definitely have improved, you just can't see it here due to the wind.
Transition 2

Comments:

Pretty great run! 8:35 pace! Not much else to say.
What would you do differently?:

Not much!

Nicely done!  Great race, especially for the first of the season (and weather conspired against much early season training!).

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

Don’t forget this is an incredibly big year for sport with the Olympics back in Athens where the modern Olympics started, and especially triathlon to make its second appearance.
