Needing an indoor option for bike training. Spin bike or bike trainer. I do not have an extra wheel and would have to purchase an assembly with trainer , or purchase a decent spin bike. What are your thoughts?

get a trainer... ride YOUR bike. You don't need an extra wheel, just an old tire to swap out when it's on the trainer.

Hands down - get a trainer ... and try out TrainerRoad.com with it. Nothing beats training on YOUR bike in YOUR position... and couple that with the power feedback (either virtualPower or actual power if you have a power meter) and you have the perfect training solution.

Trainer most definitely.

Check CL for an old wheel to pick up. Lots of used wheels that are no longer good for the road but would work fine on a trainer.

I like to utilize both!

I like having a trainer at home, but I only like to use it with Spinerval DVDs by Coach Troy Jacobson, otherwise I get too bored.  If you have a gym membership, supplementing with a few Spin classes is nice.  In Spin class we do a lot of intervals, jumps, standing on heavy gears etc.... really mixes it up.

But if you are looking to purchase either a trainer or a spin bike, I agree with those who said trainer.  Better to train on your own bike.

Getting a trainer allows you to utilize virtual power through trainer road, golden cheetah, etc.  To me, that would be a HUGE reason to go with the trainer.  I agree that riding your bike is important, but in either case, if it's boring or feels like poking your eyes with needles, then it doesn't really matter.

Lots of good stuff said about the trainer. And I wonder about the idea of "decent spin bike" going together with what the trainer setup would cost.
