6 months ago I had this bright idea - to register for a 70.3 as a relay team so I could slay my swim demon and that's all I would have to worry about. Looking back on yesterday that was a pretty smart move if I say so myself :)

The Patriot is a small race (they keep it under 1,000 participants) and it's well run by Sun Multisports. This year, they tried a new swim start. Within each wave, they sent 3 swimmers into the water every 10 seconds. I really must say it was calm, organized and totally not intimidating. It was perfect for me. The only real drawback was drafting became impossible unless you could catch someone in front of you but even then everyone was so spread out that you were mostly on your own. That wasn't really an issue for me because I'm terrible at drafting and I really needed to swim on my own this time.

Starting out was great - Just Keep Swimming as Dorie says. About 200 yards in I took in some water and had that "OH CRAP" moment. So I stopped for a second, regained my composure and moved on. I really need to learn to swim straight though. According to Garmin, I swam 1.42 miles instead of 1.2. I'm going to assume it's right because that way I like my overall pace better :)

After I rounded the first bouy in the rectangle, the water got REALLY choppy. I started to think to my self "uh oh, if this continues I will totally hurl in the water." So I just put my head back down and kept going. The waters calmed and the rest of the course was smooth sailing.

My biker and runner both had killer days. We came in 5th out of all the relay teams (27) and 4th out of 16 in our division "mixed relay." However, even if I had a perfect swim, we could not have moved up (that's how good the top 3 teams were!)

All in all it was a good day and I accomplished my goal: swim good.
What would you do differently?:

I have to get some pointers on swimming straight :)

Yay, Randee!  Great way to slay the swimming dragon!  Looks like you did a great job and had lots of fun in the process.  Straight lines are over-rated.

Nice swim!

I look at the extra distance as just getting more for your money.

Glad that you slew the swim demon - nicely done!

Great work!!

Finding a way to kill the OWS beast is hard unless we actually go out and do OWS.  Great job swimming and keeping your head in the swim!

Mission accomplished!  I really like TT swim starts.  Nice job staying calm when you took on water, and congrats on your team's accomplishments!

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
