Subject: Longest you've gone without taking a day off?
I used to take a day or two off during the weekends. Not because I was sore or anything, I just used to think that it would let me recover from the week and set me up for Monday morning. I'm training for my first HIM in September and my 16 week training plan started June 1st, but starting back in May I started doing 2 a day workouts and I wanted to start increasing my volume slowly before June so I stopped taking weekends off. I have actually gone 44 days now with no days off and to be honest, I feel GREAT. My volume has gone up slowly but considerably the past 6 weeks or so. I am running 6 days a week now (running is my weakness by far). Although not every run has to be a long run. Just the consistency of doing it so often has helped greatly. Whats your personal experience regarding the longest time you've gone without taking a day off?

My record is 58 days. I had no problems at all.
I think the important thing is to recognize when your body needs to go easy (rest). On those days, I'd try to swim or do an easy bike.

If I remember right is was 320 or so......but on day 321 or so my knee fell apart and I started a streak of consecutive days doing nothing.

Last year I did Memorial Day to Labor Day without a full rest day but with plenty of active recovery.

The limiting factor for me is that I WON'T do any sort of a workout after an Ironman or a Marathon. Since I do 4 marathons a year that pretty much limits my time anyway. My last full rest day this year was in the beginning of May after OC Marathon and I probably won't take another one unless I need it until after Long Beach in October.

My guess would be somewhere around 2 months.  For sure not 3 months.  More than likely just because something came up or I had a busy day including travel.

I used to be a bit more OCD about keeping those types of streaks alive as much as possible just for the sake of "the streak," but not so much anymore.  Fitness is about the big picture.  The culmination of all your workouts over a long period of time and not by any one workout you did or didn't do.

Probably around 45 consecutive days or so without a break is as long as I've gone.

After crashing on the bike on June 7th I am now on an opposite streak and about to go into day 10 without a workout.   I'll be seeing an ART doc Thursday in hopes of recovering and still making Vineman 70.3 in 4 weeks.

Similar for me. Done about 2 months for sure a few times, but not sure if any went to 3. I have mixed feelings on streaks. They can be a useful tool in some situations, but it can be quite easy to slip into focusing on the streak more so than what is needed to advance one's fitness. Which makes the streak more of a distraction. Like Jason said, it's fitting all the pieces together, or the culmination.

Maybe a couple of months. I took great pride in those active recovery days.

However, after a while of taking very few rest days I found I had progressed to needing regularly scheduled rest days, like I did when I first started.

There are old runners and there are bold runners, but there aren't any old bold runners....

Last year it had to be close to 90 days.  This year, it's not so much has how many days in a row I've worked out, it's more of a question of how many workouts can I get in.  Real Life chaos is certainly getting in the way.

I used the Pfitz 18/85 training plan for the 2011 Boston Marathon and ran everyday up until the Thursday before the race, so my longest streak is 121 days.

Was just curious so I checked out your training logs. I have no idea how you don't take a day off especially after looking at your workload on Friday the 13th this month. 2 bikes (15 miles each), 2 swims (3000 yards total), and 2 runs (10 miles each). That was just one day and I saw a few others like that as well. Damn man, keep up the good work.

Something over 6 years.

That was many years ago. I was inspired by Ron Hill, one of the greatest 'streakers' of them all, who is now up to ~50 years without missing a day; he was barely at 20 years at the time. It was mostly fine, and I was definitely got to be a better runner over time. It can be good to not have to even decide whether you're going to go for a run that day. BUT the streak can get to be oppressive. It was actually a bit of a relief when I finally broke the streak.

My longest is somewhere around 45 days building up to IMFL last year. Coach gives me 7 days a week but I seem to always get in atleast 1 rest day a month

Is there a magic number of days off for your training plan? Is it a one size fits all or an an individual choice?
