Expert 2373 Floriduh | Subject: Guess it's hard-wired So I'm going on a business trip next week for 10 days. I have a O/N layover in Amsterdam on the way back, ~20 hrs. The hotel I have made a reservation at is down by the Museumplein (park near the Van Gogh museum and Rijksmuseum), south of the city center. I'm looking for restaurants/bars/etc :-) in the area and notice that on the other side of the Museumplein there is a public swimming pool. After seeing that, the thought did pass my mind that maybe I should bring my goggles and get in a few laps while there. Seriously, this sport has warped my thinking. |

Extreme Veteran 1001 Highlands Ranch, Colorado | Subject: RE: Guess it's hard-wired I don't think that it is warped, just good planning. When I make hotel reservations for business my priorities are: 1) Distance to my morning meeting. 2) Proximity to running trails. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Guess it's hard-wired Vondelpark is also a really nice place to run--I think it is in the general vicinity. I also noticed on Google Maps when we went last year that there is a public pool nearby (possibly the one you mention--this one was indoors) but that would have been a hard sell with Mom, who's a non-swimmer. She's amendable to hanging out at a beach or dock while I do OWS, but hanging out in an indoor pool's pretty dull. She had a nice walk while I ran in the park instead. If it's an outdoor pool--might be a bit chilly. We went late June last year and temps were in the 40's to 50's all day, with periodic drizzle. Have to admit--I always book accommodation and sometimes even choose destinations with running and (when feasible) open water swimming in mind. I brought a wetsuit on a bike tour in Europe last year, and used it four times! It's not so much that I'm OCD about training--I just like to do my thing somewhere new and different. It's also a great way to meet locals. In my travels I've met members of the Burmese and Cambodian Olympic teams, and a Columbian man and his son who were training for an English Channel swim, among others. Expert 2373 Floriduh | Subject: RE: Guess it's hard-wired No way I'm going to grind out some laps in a pool during my time in a city with so much to see. I think, however, I will do as Hot suggested and go running in Vondelpark. My flight doesn't leave until the afternoon, so a morning run would b great. Running while on trips is a great way to get a different perspective on a different place. One of my fondest was running on the DC mall about sundown in October. |

Master 2802 Minnetonka, Minnesota | Subject: RE: Guess it's hard-wired Try to get to Café de Klos for dinner. Wayyyy off the beaten path, a huge semi-circle bar, very few tables, a carnivores wet dream, and one of the most fun dinners I have ever had. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Guess it's hard-wired If you are there for breakfast and not a nutritional purist, go for the applecake. Don't hold back on the whipped cream. Sooo good! As for the rest of Dutch food.....ugh. Not much of a carnivore or into fried food, so pretty underwhelmed. We did find some great Indonesian places using online restaurant apps, though. There are also lots of good soup and sandwich type cafes around for lunch. |

Alright you have 20 hours in Amsterdam, how beneficial long term will that swim be and how much will you take from it? How often do you get to be in Amsterdam and how many things in Amsterdam can you do in other places in the world? Honestly, unless you have your peak A race I would recommend that time wandering around in Amsterdam, its an absolutely fantastic place to spend and if you want to get any training in go for a run in the city or Vondel Park. That way you can embrace the city, culture, and scenery a bit more then just staring at a black line, which you can do virtually anywhere back home. |

Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Guess it's hard-wired Yeah, it does warp one's perspective (for good AND bad). I'm guessing that's the main point of the post, and I totally agree!! To hop in on the working out while traveling theme, personally, I love to go for a run in ANY new city - even a 20 hr. layover and I'm bringing a singlet and shoes. Lets me see more of the city than I can do just walking and there is something just special about sweating in new places. Swimming (FOR ME) not so much - but there are a few places where a swim would be part of the experience (an outdoor venue like Barton Springs in Austin comes to mind). Just a pool? Not for me... But, if you think of sampling the local chlorine the way I think of local running, then go for it. If not, as Ben says above, there are MANY things to see (but perhaps not do!) in Amsterdam that are worth it and unrelated to the pool. Have fun! You're lucky to have the opportunity, so enjoy it however you best enjoy it. Matt |

When I checked into the hotel, I asked for a running map, then I went to see if the pool was long enough for laps (it was not). Running is a great way to check out a new city. I like to get up early and head out before traffic picks up. I have come across people setting up for festivals, found interesting restaurants, historical sites, etc.... |

It's cool to import the route and see it at the Washington Mall, Hyde Park, Eiffel Tower, Rome, Barcelona. It's a unique route when running on the deck of a cruise ship (obviously disregard the distance). |
