Subject: Guess my time thread...with a PRIZE!!!

I'll be doing Cycle to the Sun again this Saturday.  35.2 mile race from Paia at sea level to the top of Haleakala on Maui.  10,000 feet of straight climbing.  It's a mass start road race, but generally it eventually turns into a time trial as the drafting benefits are minimal after the first 7 miles or so...and other then the 3-5 guys who can actually win the race, most people race it for time like they would a marathon or what not.

Rather than bore you with my training (I don't use the logs here anymore anyway), I'll simply say that I've done this race in 2011 and 2012 with times of 3:37:XX and 3:40:XX respectively.  It was really windy in 2012 and I kind of blew up.  Shooting for somewhere around 3:30ish if that helps you.  I can say with 100% certainty, I will not go lower than 3:10 (3:20 would be the race of my life I think), so don't even bother guessing that low.  Winner usually comes in around 2:5X and the course record is something like 2:36 set by Ryder Hesjedal.  Although some amateur might have broken it as there's a faster time on Strava.

Anyway...just take a wild guess.  You could pull a "Ben"...guess 4:30...and get lucky.  I won't look at this thread again until after the race so it won't impact what I do out there, nor will you hurt my feelings.

Closest guess gets a men's size large T-Shirt from Maui Cyclery shipped anywhere in the US (Priority Mail Flat rate small box).  If you aren't in the US, you can still guess, just ineligible for the shirt.  Sorry to my Canadian friends.

Race is on Saturday, but I doubt results will be posted right away...so feel free to guess up to the time when I get back to my hotel to recheck this thread.

ETA: Please include seconds.  H:MM:SS  Or if you're really mean...HH:MM:SS

Based on a complex calculation of expected wind conditions, temperature, adjustments for air density as you get higher and the extra piece of pie you had a month ago, I came up with 3:32:10.

Good luck!

After much consideration, I ran a complex algorithm that included wind, temps, grade, bike weight, your weight, phase of the moon, and also factored in your goals, hopes and dreams. I think you'll beat your goal. I came up with 3:29:59.

Well, in this little game of Battleship you started there are already WAY too many torpedos in the water aimed squarely at the time I actually REALLY think you will go, so instead I am going to shoot WAY wide and guess DNF due to a mechanical. Specifically the failure of a hastily and shoddily glued tubular.

;^)

Seriously, good luck Jason - you are going to kill it. I REALLY hope I don't win the t-shirt!!

This month I upped my bike time a lot but at relatively low intensity and I started experiencing pain on the outside lower part of my knee. It did not affect anything other than cycling.

The optimal number of times you should weight train is dependant on the time of year, how close you are to your A race, and which training cycle you are in.

Should I have time goals for the first sprint? Should I just finish the race at a reasonable pace? I'm not sure how to approach this.

We triathletes are a lucky lot. We have the time and the resources to enjoy a sport that is time consuming and can be very expensive. I take this opportunity to reflect on my good fortune.
