Pre-race routine:

Almost forgot to eat lunch today. At about 3:30, I realized why I was so hungry and figured I'd better eat so I wouldn't bonk. Came home after work at the usual time, changed clothes, and drove to the venue.
Event warmup:

Mostly watched the weather and hoped for the best! There were thunderstorms going on 45 min. before the race was supposed to start. Drove over figuring I'd hang out in the car if need be. By the time I got there, the rain was done so I parked and checked in. Did make a couple trips back to the car to drop off stuff. 2nd trip was solely because I HAD to get a monkey knapsack and they weren't available when I picked up my bib. Other than that, tried to sit down as much as possible to minimize wear and tear on my back.

Comments:

PR'd again!! First 5k that I've done without walking. I had a goal of 10:15 mpm and came in under that. Ran a little faster to start, then reminded myself to run my own race instead of the pace of others around me. I started out about 2/5 back from the front and passed up a fair number of people who pooped out within the first mile or so.

At about mile 2, I encouraged a 12 y.o. boy who was walking. He picked up his paced and ran with me for most of the next mile. We chatted as we ran. It was pretty cute. He told me about how he'd run the Bolder Boulder this year and that he was the fastest in his family except for his college-aged brother. About 0.2 mi. from the end, he dropped back to a walk so he could "go fast at the end." I told him I expected him to pass me but I think my pace was just a little fast for him. I meant to wait for him afterwards to congratulate him but forgot. Oops.

Felt like I could have pushed more at the end; still had some left in the tank. Since I was using this as a training run and still had another 20 min. to go for the day, it was okay that I didn't go all out.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get better at drinking during races.
Post race
Warm down:

Met Alex at the finish line, then walked back to the car to drop off my Garmin and water bottle. After that, we went into the zoo, where I had a piece of not-very-good pizza and we walked around awhile. When we left, I ran home from the zoo to round out my 50 min. of running for the day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really other than overall fitness.

Event comments:

Start and finish got a little congested because the timing mat was kind of small. Other than that, fun family race with some entertaining costumes.

Woo Hoo - a PR and first time no walking!!  Great job!  I'm a little disappointed that you didn't get in the spirit of dropping your drawers for the run  but other than that, you did wonderfully !

Hey, I did technically drop my drawers.  That's why I included that first (awful!) picture.  Evidently my camera phone sucks, or it was operator error by the volunteer who took it.  In the 2nd picture she took, I had no head!  In any case, the picture is me, dropping the drawers I bought (thus, they were mine). Yes, I knew I was going to have to defend myself to the Pod.

Thanks!  Sadly, I'm actually betting that they're going to fall a little slower now that I've finally made it to running the full distance.  I can't reasonably expect to drop 2 minutes every time I do a 5k, although it sure would be nice if I could.  Tried to run that speed again this weekend and learned that a flat asphalt surface is WAY faster than a hilly dirt trail...

Lotsa good stuff in here: giving to charity, motivating a youngster, NO walking, and a PR!!  Congrats, Mary!  I, too, predict faster and faster times for you.

No pics of monkey knapsack?!

I'm sorry to say that I picked up a lion knapsack instead, which I discovered last night when I picked up the pile of shirts, jacket, race number, etc., that got dumped on a chair on Friday night.  It does, however, have cute ears that stick out from the sides.  I'll try to get a picture tonight.

Thanks.  I might have been a little faster had it been a streaking race.  So fast, in fact, that you wouldn't have even seen me!

And sea lions.  You forgot sea lions.  Those brown lumps behind me in the 2nd picture are 3 sea lions.  And yes, one of them is using another for a pillow.  It was pretty amusing to see the bottom one twitching around like "Get off me, you big lug!" while the other one would wiggle and bite and roar, as if to say "Settle down, wouldja?!  I just get comfortable and you move!"  Meanwhile, the 3rd one (on the left side) was just lying there, trying to ignore the ruckus.

Way to go!  A PR and encouraging a kid in one swoop!

What's the story behind the race name?  Do they donate the items to charity?

The race is a fundraiser for Underwearness, which helps kids in need get underwear (www.underwearness.org).  They work with the local children's hospital, a couple shelters, and a couple residential treatment facilities that have a lot of foster kids to make sure that needy kids have underwear.  They asked participants to bring packages of underwear to the race with the goal of collecting 1,000 pairs, plus some of the race proceeds went to the organization as well.  The "Run Wild" part is because the after-party is at the zoo, which is right next to where the race is.  Great name, great cause.  Couldn't pass it up!

Very cool cause and after party idea!!  We have given packages of underwear and other undergarments to a missionary in Haiti because that is something the kids need to attend school and the prostitutes need as they get out of the "business"

Awesome PR!! Awesome knapsack!!! Awesome helping the 12 y.o.!! Cute pix!!

I find that there are always those that start out faster than their ability and they are slowly (or quickly) reeled in if I just maintain MY pace. Congrats!

Congrats on the PR (and even more for running the whole way)!  Awesome job on this one - and you even had more in the tank.  WOOT!

The knapsack was totally worth doubling back for, too.

Excellent work Mary, you've come so far from where you started. And you got photo bombed by sea lions bonus.

Focusing on the first part of the pull and avoiding the dreaded “dropped elbow” can help transform your stroke, and allow you to relax and let go of these common challenges.
