Subject: how long should a last long bike be before an HIM?

I've done about a dozen of them, but this year am without the luxury of a coach. I also took a last minute vacation for 12 days, missing what is normally an important 3 week out from race big week. I did get in 25 miles running and around 4000m swimming (hey not too bad for going to an unfamiliar country) but my legs just aren't where I'd want them to normally be. Today's 54 mile bike ride two weeks out from my race was slow slow slow...I did 450 miles on the bike in May (thanks to a century), but only 250 this month.

Is it wise to do one last 50 miler the week before the race? Its Vineman 70.3 incidentally, and I've heard conflicting reports on its "hilliness". If I don't do 50, whats a good distance?  Normally I'd just chill out next week but I'm worried my legs are still on vacation.

I wouldn't. The ROI isn't worth it - you aren't going to be that much fitter and are more likely to be pooped. The week before my most recent half (Quassy), I did three rides for about 3 hours total - 2 of the rides were relatively easy, one easy and pusing it up a bit at the end, and the last a few days out was more of a spin.

I usually had my last long long ride 2 weeks before HIM and then one week out I did max 2 hour ride.

Two hour ride is the most I'd advise.

You aren't gaining any fitness within 10 days before the race so 2 hours is the most I'd say to ride a week out. Have confidence in your fitness from previous months. Fitness doesn't just up and leave you! It's still there - you just have to access it!

On the long bike rides of 80+ miles I get very strong pain in my toes. I slow down my pace and I might recover, but when I hit the next hill it is back. Could this be some kind of circulation issue?

Most of those thinking about tackling a long swim instinctively feel it’s necessary to Do much to build endurance - more yards, harder laps. But a focus on Receiving is ideal for long distances.

The most valuable thing you can do for your endurance training is to schedule a weekly 2-4hr long ride from now until the end of time. Simply make this “what you do” every Saturday or Sunday morning.

I recognize that my 45 minute jog Wednesday night does not really count as a ”long” run, but for me it was! Yesterday I felt fine…but man, today the legs are SORE.

Approximately how long do you think can I reasonably expect to keep making these improvements in speed and performance? I know it has to drop off sometime, I'd just like to have an idea of when.

My question is on nutrition in a long race. Most intake will occur on the bike, but I'm curious as to the details. I didn't do real well in this area last year and really need to improve.
