New user 121 Green Bay, WI | Subject: My first dog attack and first crash all in the same ride. Well today was a rough day on the bike. Started out ok until mile 2 when I was attacked by a dog. In case you ever thought you could out run a dog. I'm telling you right now...... You can't. This mid-sized mutt comes out of nowhere... At least he was barking so I heard him. I beared down to try to out run him but there was no way. Plan B was to unclip and give him a swift kick as he lunged at me. Thank god that worked and after that he turned back. I had a nice ride going after that and was pushing myself pretty hard. About mile 28 I was coming in to my home stretch and had to make a left turn. I was heading in to the wind and decided to stay on the aero bars as I came around the corner. Unfortunately, as I was taking the corner, a car coming from the road I was turning on decided to roll through the the stop sign and turn right cutting off my path a bit. I straightened but by then it was too late. luckily I live in a Semi rural area with ditches and small curbs. I hit the curb, went over the bars and slid face first in to a water/muck filled ditch. Luckily neither me nor my bike were hurt......well other than my ego! The guy didn't even stop to see if I was ok. Another car passing by stopped to make sure I was ok and then she asked..."you want a picture". I'm like sure might as well so here it is still covered in muck! You can see it in the background where I went in. It's funny to laugh at now but it scared the hell out of me at the time. (image.jpg) Attachments ---------------- image.jpg (193KB - 10 downloads) |

Now every time I drive by the intersection. I'll laugh about it. |

First off, I am sorry this happened to you, and glad to hear you weren't injured from either incident. And now you have a picture to chuckle at later! Your adventure reminds me of something my mom used to say to us kids, "If you're going down, you might as well go down in a blaze of glory." Hopefully this means the rest of your season will be incident-free! |

It was a T intersection with the car having the stop sign and me having the right of way. I take some of the blame as I was try to cut the corner a little at the speed I was at....but had they stopped I would have made the corner no problem. |

I'm telling you right now...... You can't. First off, glad you're OK. You can out run them IMO ... just depends on the terrain. Not saying it always the best thing to do however. I live in an area with no leash laws, so encounters like yours happen to me just about every other ride. Usually, I quick spray of water in the face from your water bottle is the best defense. This one dog in particular only a few miles from my house always takes chase. The road is pancake flat, straight and fast. I have had him keep up with me up to about 28mph at times for about a 1/4 of a mile. Thankfully, he always stays on the side of the road. This dog is so legendary, there is a Strava segment named in his honor. Just a few weeks ago on a short steep hill this dog comes out of a yard stealthily, and proceeds to cut right in front of me. Since it was on a hill, i was already going pretty slow, and i had a second to slow down before i clipped him in the shoulder with my front tire (unintentionally). He let out a yelp, and took off back to his porch .. learned his lesson I hope, but probably not. Luckily, I was going slow enough and didn't hit him flush, so I was able to maintain control. I wish people would be responsible pet owners, unfortunately in the area I live and ride in, many are not. Edited by rventuri 2014-07-03 7:43 AM |

You can probably only outrun a large dog on a downhill. Golden Retrievers top out around 30mph (My greyhound tops out around 40+ so even on slight downhills you'd be out of luck), so if they are interested they can probably catch you. Now they can't maintain that for very long, so if you can hammer and they aren't too dedicated to catching you, you might outrun them. |

Seems like the water bottle squirt would be the best option as long as you don't fall off your bike while trying to do it. Only a really nasty obsessed dog would keep chasing after that. |

I kinda felt bad because he kept chase for a decent amount of time, to the point that his owners probably didn't even see him anymore. I almost turned around to escort the fellow home. |
