Subject: Average Triathlete Weight
Ok so as of the last year I've lost 70ish lbs i've gone down from 315 to 240. What I want to know is what's the average weight of a triathlete? I feel like I should get down to about 185. I'm about 6' so would this be about right?

From the articles I have read, endurance athletes should weigh in the range of 2.0 - 2.5 pounds per inch of height. A 6" tall person should weigh 180 pounds or less.

I heared that no one has won the Ironman in Hawaii that that was above that range. In fact no one has been > 2.2.

Congratulations on your weight loss. I know how hard it is to get the weight off and keep it off. I am working at dropping weigth myself. Keep up the good work.

I'm 6'1" and I'm shoot for 185lbs myself. It was my highschool weight, when I was wrestling. I don't want to be any leaner/smaller than that. I know at 50+ I won't be winning my AG at Kona anyways, but I plan on having fun at my local sprint and olympic length events. Good Luck

There are so many different types of triathletes.  So on average, they aren't twigs.  Just go to a sprint race and you'll see just about every body type.  Usually the longer the distance, the leaner they tend to be on average.

Personally, I'm 6' and weighed in a 186 this morning.  I have dropped a little over 20 pounds this last year and feel that I still have more to go to lose some excess belly pudge and also make life easier for racing.  Especially for the run.  But at this weight, there's nothing stopping me from doing any distance that I want to train for.  I'd like to see how things look/feel at 175.  I'm guessing that I won't ever go much below that.  But I also will never be a podium contender either.  I race/train for personal satisfaction and to have a motivator to stay healthier.

185 would be a reasonable goal to shoot for I would think.  At some point, you'll probably change that number up/down as you get closer.  But it's a good number to start with.

I'm 6'3" at that range I would be 150-187.5, I would be a scarecrow, I think I will forgo the Kona win and get down to a reasonable 205

Yeah, that formula is probably as useful as BMI. At 5'10", BMI says I should be between 130-173. Are you kidding me? When I was 190 a few years ago, I got a Bod Pod done and it showed I had 15% body fat. So to meet the top end of 173, I would be in the neighborhood of 3-4% body fat which is where competition bodybuilders sit at for a few days before competing. Totally unrealistic.

As someone else said it really depends on your body composition and type (always forget the names but something like ectomorph endomorph or smth). But in general I think the 2-2.5 pounds per inch is still quite a wide margin to have any meaningful purpose. I am 6'8" so my range is from 175-200 (that's a huge range!). At my current winterweight I am right on the edge of 200, but in summer would likely drop at least 10 pounds. Never done a reliable body fat percentage but I feel that I am not uberskinny then but probably I am not the most objective judge as our subset of athletes tends to view skinny as something else than the rest of the general population

2.0-2.5 pounds per inch doesn't sound quite right...

On the other side of it, at 5'7" the upper range for me would be 167.5 pounds. I was only ever that heavy when I was pregnant. That would NOT be a good weight for me! The lower end of 134 is where I'd like to be. (that corresponds to a BMI of 21; now I'm 22).

I would use 2/in for women and 2.5/in for men. Maybe a little more realistic.
