Really happy to have found this site. Racing my first Aquathlon next Saturday, July 12th, in Coney Island. I've always been a swimmer (in the pool), cyclist, and runner separately but never did a multisport race. I had my first open water swim lesson today in Coney Island and did good. But I'm getting really nervous to the point of panic now. In desperate need of pointers and inspirational talk please!

Welcome!  In an open water swim, just try to count...stroke, stroke, breath...1, 2, breath, 1, 2, breath...etc.  Whatever number breathing pattern you use, just counting it out in your head has calmed me in the past.  Even inserting a few breastrokes (or sidestroke)  for sighting and breathing every 10 strokes (counting them in your head) has helped me get into a rhythm much easier - more of a mental distraction.

Many thanks!! The swells daunted me during my open water swim lesson yesterday and the anticipation of swimming in deeper water is scaring me. I guess it's the idea that I don't have complete control due to the waves (as opposed to the calmness of the pool).

Ron knows whereof he speaks. Stay calm and trust in all of the swim training you have done. Good Luck and have fun!

Hope you have fun with your event. =)
One major pointer that has been given over-n-over is to swim the path of least resistance. Depending on the pack and if you are familiar with it, stay to the outside or back while still staying within reach of the pack. And another noted point is to spot spot and spot. Knowing where you are at and swimming in a straight line will prevent from over swimming. Lastely, if you are familiar with swimming from both sides, you can breath away from waves...

Good luck and most of all... Have Fun!!!

Thanks so much for your words of encouragement! Actually thinking about doing a 5i50 or IM70.3 next year. As soon as I complete the Brooklyn Tri in October, I'm sure I'll feel more confident

Many thanks for the advice! I saw some videos on Youtube of the swim portion and the starters are so close to each other that I'm amazed they don't hit each other. I certainly like my space so I will definitely say in the back - at least for my first coming up in October (The Brooklyn Triathlon is my first tri and is also the inaugural race!). I know I'll love this that I will sign up for a 5i50 and 70.3 soon afterwards

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

I had read the articles on BT, I'd trained, and I thought I had prepared. There were, however, a few things that I didn't internalize despite what I'd been told.

The ONLY way to compete in my first triathlon was to do it on my BMX. I’m no professional—nor do I aspire to be one, I just want to be fit and healthy.

One of my fears, besides the radioactive material content of the Hudson River, was the water temperature. I found the water was much warmer as I inched closer to the holding dock.
