Subject: last minute tips on using tubulars?

I've had a set of old HED Stinger 60s that I've only used for Olys, mainly out of fear that something happens in one of my bigger (more important) races, I'd just be out of luck.  I have rented Zipp 808s for my Ironmans that were clinchers.  This week I"m doing Vineman and decided it was just too expensive to rent wheels (heck my bike's airfare alone is $175) and I want to use my wheels. I rode them yesterday and LOVED them. Oh my gosh, so so so much smoother than my regular wheels!

Here's what I know:  I have pit stop and I have an old tube to use as a spare. The choice will be to take either, not both.  I have WATCHED my tires being taken off and glued, but have not done it. I know I need a razor, pull it off, and supposedly the rim and the old tire have enough glue on them to hold it on the rim, so all I have to do is put it on or inflate.  The other option is if I get a flat, to use the pit stop.  Either way I will be praying it works.

Do you have any advice for me?  Or if I'm misinformed, what do I need to do?  Thank you!

What you wrote  is what I did when I had tubulars. But I would bring both pittstop and then a spare tire and razor blade.

You could pretreat the tires as well with a sealant. I have forgotten the brand I have used.

I would look for some youtube videos that may show you how to do a quick change in case of a flat..how to cut off and tips on putting the new tire on. If you go that route be careful around corners.

Thanks Kathy! I hope to trade them in for a set of clinchers. My only goal is really to finish, so I'd be upset to get a flat and have to bow out. But my ride was so much smoother using them, that I am set on giving them a go.

I would bring both… PitStop works great, but if the gash is too large, then there's no sealant in the world that will help. When you pre-glue your tubulars, make sure you leave one inch of un-glued area 180degress from the valve stem. If you ever get a flat, grab the tubular by the un-glued area and pull, you'll get the tire off in a second… Then mount the pre-glued one, pump up to pressure and finish the race. Just be careful in sharp turns as the replacement tubular will more than likely not be as secure as a properly glued tire. The risk of it rolling is minimal, but losing a few minutes and staying safe is what I did (when I raced tubulars… have since changed to tubeless, which has a very similar feel)

No matter what you decide for flats, Pre-slime the tires.
