Canyon, Texas | Subject: Upgrading to Ultegra 6800 11spd: wheel question Howdy! In preparation for IMLT, I am strongly leaning towards upgrading the groupset on my 2012 Trek 1.2 9spd cassette to 2014 Ultegra 6800 11spd. My question is, will I need a new rear wheel to accommodate the larger cassette or would I be able to simply install the 6800 hub on my existing, standard wheel? As you can see, I am not familiar with interchanges/compatibilities; any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks!! |

There's some wheels where you can swap out the hub body, but for most, it means a new wheel… Campy managed to use the same hub design as they have since 9 speed... |

Veteran 572 Hudson Valley | Subject: RE: Upgrading to Ultegra 6800 11spd: wheel question I ride both 9 and 10 speed drivetrains. I experience no advantage when paired with a 50x34 compact crank. The advantage of 10 speed over 9 happens when using a 53x39 crank; the 16t cog in the 10 speed 12-25 cassette gets a lot of use. |

You need to also upgrade the FD, RD, cranks/chainrings, chain, shifters and cassette. Basically you need the entire groupset which costs about 3x what your bike is worth. |

I'm looking at getting the groupset but most of the kits seem to be missing wheels... I'm not too excited about buying new wheels for training. I want an upgrade and I am interested in the 11:32 cassette. Just curious on the cheapest wheel/hub I can get away with for training. |

Pro 5892 , New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Upgrading to Ultegra 6800 11spd: wheel question A word of advise… the 11-32 cassette may look interesting, but the steps between each cog is just too large to really give you a great functional use. Basically, you'll either be slightly over geared or slightly under geared at any given point, never really finding the perfect gear for that moment. You're better with a narrower cassette and a compact. |

Do a google image search for "10 speed spacer ring" 11-32 on an 11-speed cassette is the same as an 11-28 on a 10 speed cassette, with one extra bail-out gear. I wouldn't worry about the spacing being too far apart if you have 11 speed. http://www.slowtwitch.com/Tech/Cassette_Spacers_2013_3978.html

Canyon, Texas | Subject: RE: Upgrading to Ultegra 6800 11spd: wheel question Wonderful! Thank you for all of the advice! I settled on a new set of Shimano RS-21's, 11-speed compatible. Still cheap ($220) but looks like a decent upgrade from my current set up, plus a little easier on the eyes. I currently have a 11-28t 9-speed; I imagine the jump between cogs can only get smoother from here. |

9 | Subject: RE: Upgrading to Ultegra 6800 11spd: wheel question IIRC, a 10 speed cassette will fit on your original wheels. If you went with a 105 groupset you could use your existing wheels for training or whatever and your new wheels for racing while saving some money. I have a 2010 Trek 1.2 and have toyed with the 105 idea, but the existing drivetrain works well so I'm in not worried about it. Although with this amount of money you are approaching the price of a Felt S32 tri bike. |
