Subject: Leave a note!
Going to preach a bit here...
Yesterday a local gent went missing. He went on a ride and never came home. As it turns out, he's going to be ok (news is still pretty sketchy), no life-threatening injuries.
But it reminded me that I always tell my wife WHEN I'm headed out but rarely WHERE I'm headed. This information could be very helpful in the event that I don't make it home.
So, please take 20 seconds and leave a note of where you are going and when you expect to be home. It could save your life and a LOT of worry to those that care about you.
Ok, end of lecture. Train on!

A note goes a long way.  Enabling GPS tracking on your phone would also help.

Road ID has a free app that sends an email to someone and lets them track you

Garmin 510 and 810 have this built in and works with your phone to do the same thing.

A friend of mine has a free App from Road ID that sends a message to a family member if you're not moving after x minutes. We were at a gas station and he walked to one end of the parking lot just so his wife wouldn't get the notice. His wife can look up his position at any time. Cool App! Of course leaving the note would be good so that they know that you're actually ne a ride.

Some of us don't have anyone to leave a note for.  Unless my cats learn to read.

Life360 is a free app for tracking. Not only does it provide real-time location, but also history and allows you to "check in".

Same here, my rides mostly happen when my kids are at their moms house. Eventually my kids would start calling people if I was not there to pick them up.

Assuming you are talking about the cyclist in Madison? Story is sketchy to say the least, but yes the note is a great idea, often used by hikers and rock climbers. This reminds me of Aaron Ralston. If he would have left a note he probably would still have his right arm.

Yes, Rob is on my ski team. Kind of a strange situation as nobody really knows what the heck happened. They found him this morning in a park.
But it was enough for me to take pause and realize that this is a pretty simple way to not put my wife through that kind of worry.

A good reminder! I always tell my husband where I'm running, for how long, and when I expect to be done.

Ha! Same I tell people if you don't hear from me in a week...well that's pretty normal. If it's been a few months you might want to start considering to get concerned.

I'm in the same boat... but I wonder if notes are really necessary? If I lived with a SO/ family I'd do it out of respect... but as a single person I always have my Road ID, and usually my wallet, on my when I ride, and usually when I run. If I get in an accident my emergency contacts are finding out right away.

If that guy wasn't found until morning, I doubt a note that "I'm out riding at xxx" wouldn't have helped ease anyone's worries, unless he'd stayed on the route he'd left the note about.

I use the Road Bike Pro when I do my long rides. It provides an option to do live tracking and posting it to FaceBook. It lets my friends and family know where I am in real time. It also lets them know where to leave road side decorations in case I come to an untimely end.

I think the biggest thing I've learned is to quit worrying about what everyone else thinks. If I let that get to me too much I would not be the fine triathlete I am today!
