Hey BTers,

I am going to be down in Duluth, GA area this weekend and need to get about a 4 hour bike ride in. Any suggestions on where to ride and not get hit by a car would be greatly appreciated. Any good group rides I should be aware of?

Thanks. I found this on Google, but don't know where most of these places are located in relation to where I'm staying.

Just go to Stone Mountain Park. its $10 to park, but there is protected riding for cyclists within. theres a 5miles loop and a 7ish mile loop. it'll get monotonous but you wont get lost and wont get hit by a car...

pretty good climbing depending on where you're traveling from.

If you're going to be on your tri bike, you can't go too far wrong at Stone Mountain though it's a bit of a hike from Duluth. If you're on a road bike, see the Tucker Ride from the saddlebred link above. FWIW, ride start would be much closer than Stone Mountain...

Of course, there's always the Silver Comet Trail on the west side...

Just got the tentative Sunday schedule from my girlfriend and it looks like I may have lots of time on my hands Sunday morning into early afternoon. So am thinking I may head up to the gaps and get some climbing in. Can anyone recommend a place to park and/or good routes. Never been able to ride in north GA so am pretty clueless.

Thanks

That is great - you will love it. I always part at Stone Pile (link will go to google maps). There are sever spots  before and after the split it the road where you can just park on the side of the road. There will be others parked there who are also riding. Many people ride from Turners Corner as well, but from there you don't really get much of a warm up - you pretty much start climbing either way around you go. If you park at Stonepile and ride counter-clockwise at least you get about 15 minutes or so of rolling/descending warm up. 3 gap (Neels/Wolfpen/Woody) takes me about 2:10 to get around. If you have 5~5.5 hours you can get around all six gaps from there if you are a relatively decent climber. There are other routes you can ride - give us an idea of the amount of time you want to spend and I can send you some routes.

I have a 4hr ride on the schedule that is suppose to be about 75 miles. I realize with the climbing it will shorten that distance quite a bit. But a solid 4hrs in the saddle will do just fine.

Ok, I recommend you do "4 Gap." Basically from Stone Pile you ride down to Turner's Corner, up and over Neels Gap, and then up the short (but steep!) side of Hogpen Gap. at the top you will turn around and ride back down the same side, then go up and over Wolf Pen Gap, turn left at Suches, and Ride up the last little bit of Woody Gap and finish wight he long descent down the front side of Woody to your car at Stone Pile.

Here is a link to to the Route in Bike Route Toaster. The last time I did this route back in April it was 3:28 rolling time (Strava Link). If you need to extend it out you can roll down to Turners Corner and back again which would add probably another 30~35 minutes or so for the round trip, depending on how much leg you still have.

The round trip is about 56 miles, with 6700' of climbing. There is a outdoor outpost at the top of Neels with bathrooms and a water hose out back that gets water from a good, deep well. There is also a store on your left after you descend the back side of Neels (just before you turn on on 180 to head toward Hog Pen). You will pass this store again on your right as you head back toward Wolf Pen. If you haven't stopped by now you definitely want to before going up Wolf Pen. Wolf Pen can be a little tough (it is my favorite though) and then there are a long series of rollers on the run in to Suches. These rollers are the part that gets most folks in the Gaps, actually - if you haven't saved a little leg they can beat you down, but if you have you can make big time here. There is one final store stop in Suches, but you only have about 9 minutes of climbing up Woody left at that point, and then a long, really fun descent back to the car before you are done, so probably no need to stop there.

Have fun - let us know how it goes!

The most valuable thing you can do for your endurance training is to schedule a weekly 2-4hr long ride from now until the end of time. Simply make this “what you do” every Saturday or Sunday morning.

I read an article that this type of pain comes from straining the neck, especially from riding a road bike. What can you tell me about this type of injury?
