Subject: RE: calf cramps
I am training for my first sprint triathlon. When I have been doing brick workouts, my legs feel fine coming off the bike but as soon as I start running my calfs totally seize up. Last week they seemed to relax after the first mile of the run, but today the left calf did not relax until a few minutes after I stopped running. Walking doesn't seem to help.
There doesn't seem to be a problem on days I start out with a run.

Any suggestions?

Could be insufficient nutrition/hydration during the bike part?

It's likely conditioning more than nutrition or hydration.

What's your bike fit like? Is it possible that your seat is too high?

It's actually normal. Run more and bike more and it'll go away.

It's a fitness thing.

Stop pointing your toes during the bike and drive with your heels. Your calf muscles need to contract and relax to pump more blood.

All the above answers are very good. One more thing, lately I have been downing a spoonful of mustard late in the bike. It's an old bike racing trick and it does really seem to help prevent cramping in general.

As I was pulling my wetsuit off while standing in the water, my left calf cramped such that my foot was pointed, the muscle was rock hard, and I could not pull my foot out of point for 30 seconds.

Calf pain can have multiple causes. In your case, the most likely cause seems to be from a calf muscle strain. If you have had Achilles problems you can be predisposed to a calf injury.

I have a pain deep in my calf about five inches below the knee. A sports doctor did not feel anything wrong in the muscle, and there was no bruising. The tender spot can still be felt on massage.

I am training for my first IM and lately I have been getting cramps in my calves. I am a heavy salt sweater and I was wondering if that has anything to do with it?
