Set Up Events
Total Time = 1h 08m 53s
Overall Rank = 6/293
Age Group = OPEN
Age Group Rank = 5/6
Pre-race routine:

Drove to the race from Greenville
Event warmup:

Just getting registered and my gear to transition was my warmup. Had to park a few miles from the event site and didn't get to the event until ~40 minutes to race start and I still had to register.
Swim
  • 10m 22s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

Was hot, like 88 degree water hot.
What would you do differently?:

Didn't get any warm up at all so I would do that part differently
Transition 1
  • 00m
Bike
  • 35m 17s
  • 14 miles
  • 23.81 mile/hr
Comments:

Got blocked a lot by traffic on this course. A lot. could have been a much faster split. Some of the roads were sketchy. Not sure I'd do the race again based on the bike course.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, hope the cars would get out of my way.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 21m 35s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 19s  min/km
Comments:

Came off the bike strong and sitting in 4th OA. quickly bridged the gap up to the guy in 3rd but eased back thinking I may have been pushing too hard. Big mistake, this was the fast part of the course. There was a massive hill that crushed my soul in the center of the run. The downhill run after it was along a narrow winding MUP path which didn't let you get in a steady rhythm.
What would you do differently?:

Push hard at the start and mitigate the hill better.
Post race
Warm down:

None.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No warmup, not scouting the run ahead of time.

Event comments:

Didn't like the bike course. May not return next year because of it. A large section of the road was on a very busy 55mph road and the part through the neighborhoods had a lot of slow moving traffic which blocked riders.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
