Subject: rent vs ship
I am doing a tri several states away and was wondering if you would recommend renting a bike or having mine shipped. Obviously it would be easier to just rent one, but... anyone have any experience with this?

Depends on the race distance and how important it is.  I just started doing out of state tris last year, and have used tri bike transport for them.  I spent a bit of money on my bike fit, and can't imagine going 56 miles on a different setup.  I am doing a race in New York though in Sept, it's only 30 mile leg, and it's more for fun, so I am probably going to just find a road bike to rent (or maybe a tri bike).

If you have a choice to ride your own bike, I would definitely do that, even if shipping ends up being slightly more. I would only consider renting if I could get exactly the same brand/model hence fully able to replicate the fit. If you rent, make sure you bring your own pedals and seat.

I recently sent a bike to Illinois to have there while visiting Lisa's family. I went through bikeflights.com, who ships via FedEx. I went to the FedEx site, and it quoted me $125. Through bikeflights, the same box was $76. Just one data point for you.
