Pat Griskus Triathlon Series
85F / 29C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 13m 16s
Overall Rank = 59/336
Age Group = 50-54M
Age Group Rank = 9/29
Pre-race routine:

Left work about 4:15pm and hit some traffic, but not too bad. Got to Quassy about 5, Checked in and found a good spot to rack (open racking) and set up my stuff. Had a GU and X2 plus some water. Planned to try 2 new things in the race - putting on short after the swim,, and running with no socks.
Event warmup:

Swam for about 10 minutes then waited for the start. Felt great to not be constrained by a wetsuit plus not have my tri-top dragging.
Swim
  • 14m 31s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went out fast, but elevated my hear rate inthe fiirst 100-200 yards and had a slight panic attack. Had to take it easy briefly and calm down. Once I settled, I finished strong. Swimming without the tri-shirt was great.
What would you do differently?:

Steadier start.
Transition 1
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

Got my shirt on easily - did not cost me any time. Everything else was smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - this will be my standard for sprints from now on.
Bike
  • 33m 18s
  • 10.5 miles
  • 18.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Lost a few places in my age group, but definitely passed more than I got passed. Saw alot of mountain bikes - first timers I think. Pushed as hard as I could. Bike was not shifting well on my front derailer.
What would you do differently?:

Tune up is needed I think. Plus my training on the bike has been poor this year.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Pretty quick - did not use socks,so that helped.
What would you do differently?:

Again, I think sock-less for the sprints is the way to go.
Run
  • 22m 49s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Solid run - only got passed by a couple of people, but passed a bunch. Sweated my ass off - very humid. Light rain started to fall during part of it. Had a great kick at the end and passed a few in the final 200 yards.
What would you do differently?:

More training
Post race
Warm down:

Had some gatorade, tried to stop sweating.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training!!!

Event comments:

Griskus is always a good race. Many fast participants. Was hoping to do better, but didnt train enough to deserve it.

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
