I have a Sprint this Sunday and was going to install a brand new Conti GP 4000 S on the front wheel.

I had a blow-out on my front race wheel about a month ago and temporarily substituted a Vittoria Zaffiro Slick.  The replacement Conti GP 4000 S arrived a few days ago, but would it be a mistake to mount just before this race?

If it helps, I'll be racing on a FLO 60 at about 90 psi and conditions are calling for about 1/2 inch of rain the night before with a fair chance of rain during the race.

The course is rolling hills, but I haven't ridden it this year.  Last year it was in decent shape and the asphalt appeared fairly new (maybe 2 or 3 years old).

Do the Conti's need a break-in period or would they be good to go with my first ride basically being the Sprint?

Or should I play it safe and stick with the Vittorias until I get about 100 km or so on the Contis?

You'll probably gain about 10 seconds or so if you ride them a bit before the race but I wouldn't have an issue throwing them on if I can get one ride in before the race to make sure there's no manufacturing error that'll blow up the first time you ride.

When you inflate the tire, look at it under a bright light. See the glossiness? Your tire will actually get faster as that gets worn off.

Thanks Daniel.  Good to know.  I was worried about traction and grip on the road - I never knew that the tires would run slower!

Unless you plan on doing turns at 20+, I wouldn't sweat it much.
