Subject: Coconut Oil?
Hello,

I am generally following a low carb, high fat diet. Fats are mostly from olive oil, nuts, full fat Greek yogurt, cheese, avocados. I've read that coconut oil is another source of healthy fat.

How does one use coconut oil? On salads? Straight (yuck)? Cooking? Does it taste like coconut, which I am not wild about?

Any thoughts or suggestions on incorporating it into my diet are welcome.

Thanks!

Coconut oil does not taste like coconuts. You use it to bake and cook with, not as a salad oil. At room temperature it actually looks like shortening (cloudy and not liquid). Good choice for higher heat cooking.

My jar of unrefined, organic, virgin coconut oil MOST CERTAINLY tastes like coconut. But it's the first jar I've bought that has that distinct coconut taste - I think it's the unrefined part. Previous jars have had no taste at all.

I use coconut oil to oil pull, I use it on my skin and hair as a moisturizer, and occasionally cook with it if I am adding a lot of spice to cover up that coconut taste.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Lisa: I've never heard of oil pulling. Fascinating. Thank you.

To save you a little bit of trouble finding one that doesn't have a strong taste, I'd avoid Nutiva unrefined cold pressed virgin coconut oil. That's what I use. Luckily I like the taste of coconut. Yea I'm sure its the refining process that would remove the flavor. Lisa I just tried oil pulling on my mouth after I read your post. Interesting, my mouth feels so silky and smooth

I buy expeller pressed coconut oil.  There is no coconut taste (I don't like coconut).  It's pretty much the only oil I use now.

I melt a tsp full in the microwave (10 secs.) and add it to a cup of diet splash and scoop of protein powder (that has only a gram or two of fat and carb). I stir it fast and drink it down as it does harden - forms little balls, tasteless, don't mind them, kinda melt in your mouth. Usually I drink it down before I notice it.
I use the refined, supposedly has the same health properties without the coconut taste. Get an organic brand cheap at Ocean State Job Lot - a local discount chain.

Actually, coconut oil has a natural SPF of between 4-6, and is a common ingredient used in making natural sunscreens - can be very effective when mixed with another natural high-SPF ingredient like carrot seed oil.

I do bulletproof coffee in the morning and a tablespoon in my protein shake at night... Of course I live in Colorado so my coconut oil is slightly green in color...

I also saute with it and use it for baking. If you spill some on your hands, just rub it in as lotion. Very versatile stuff that is great for you.

I use it all the time. You can use it in place of butter in many things. It works great for sautéing or roasting veggies. I use it in baked goods. And I make my own deodorant with it. Coconut oil is good stuff!

You can use it as a salad dressing, and I have done so several times. Just warm it up a little. Spinach salad with bacon and hot coconut oil drizzled on top so the spinach starts to wilt a little is so good!

Coconut oil has a low smoke point: 350° F (177° C) at which it breaks to fatty acids and gets an unpleasant taste, so it is not suitable for baking or frying.
Nutrientsreview.com

Coconut oil contains saturated fats but according to one study in Philippines, it is not associated with increased LDL cholesterol levels.
