Im looking to get a bike resistance trainer for the winter. Any recommendations? Should I buy the base models around $100-150...like the one below from Performancebike.com or should I invest in a more expensive one.

Any help on this topic would be appreciated.

Smooth, adjustable magnetic resistance is the perfect training tool.

I have a low-end Nashbar mag trainer, and while it is a great value, I think I would go with a fluid trainer if I were to buy another one. The mag trainer offers a constant level of resistance, where the fluid trainer offers more resistance the faster you go (simulating riding outside a lot better.)

I don't see the need for the remote-resistance setting feature some of them have, at least not on the mag trainer. If I want more resistance, I just shift gears.

Make sure to get yourself a good heavy-duty axle skewer too if the trainer doesn't come with one. The lightweight ones that come with your wheels usually don't last too long clamped into the trainer.

Get a Cycleops Fluid 2. You won't be disappointed. Check out this link

Go fluid. I have the Ascent magnetic. It works just fine. But it's a little louder than I'd like it to be.

I'll drop a vote for the fluid trainer as well. Definitely quieter. I purchased the Kurt Kinetic, because its what the LBS carries, and it is smooth indeed. Having said all that, I hate trainers, and only get on if there is no viable alternative, e.g thunderstorms or darkness.
