Subject: vacation break
I am on track for my first IM in September but I'm taking a week-long family vacation without a bike or pool. It might be useful to step back for a few days then hit the last 5 weeks hard again. I'll bring my running shoes but can't count on that. Am I delusional - should I sell my bike on my way out of town or will you tell me to rest up and enjoy? Everything has been going well and I will get looonngg rides in the days I leave and return. Any suggestions from your experience?

If you're just *completing* AND you've been following a good plan (that is, you've been consistent otherwise) then have fun on vacation. Run a little when/if you can, but don't sweat it.

I am doing IM Barcelona on October 5th and I won't be able to bike/swim for two weeks (August 10th - August 24th) as I will be going on vacation as well.

I am confident on my training so far and I know I will put nice training as well from August 24th until 2 1/2 weeks before the race when I will start tapering. However, I am also worried about this 2 weeks "break". I am planning on running as much as I can, "swim" (I bought cords), and not much biking, but I will focus on strength exercises (biking is my strength anyways). I am not planning on PR or KQ, I am doing this IM while visiting my family in Barcelona, but I still want to finish without suffering much.

I think a one week break can be beneficial though. You can modify your training to make that week a recovery week.

Comforting words are all I needed - thanks
The cowboys with the 20hr weeks and double workout days can really get into your head. It's not the "balancing life's responsibilities forum".

Soon after I got married, I decided I needed to get motivated to work out and focus on getting back into shape. I could barely jog a quarter-mile without needing a walk break.

It sounds like your ankle has seen plenty of mileage and, by the description of your surgeon’s plan, that you have damage to the articular cartilage that caps your talus bone.
